Dyno Results

Well, I dyno'ed the Mark VIII yesterday. My current mods are listed in my profile. First off, the Reinhart chip provided an unbelievable fuel curve line. A/F was 14.8:1 then rapidly moved to 13.1:1 at WOT and stayed there until 6300 RPM. I think my numbers were a bit low though. My max HP was 230.1, max Tq was 251.2. My car has a recent tune so I don't think I can get anymore in that regard. What do these cars pull with no mods? Am I where I should be? I was expecting to see closer to the 240 HP mark. Please comment. Thanks.

RE: Dyno Results

That sounds like about the right horsepower. None of the mods in your profile would really add any significant hp, 4-5 altogether at most.

RE: Dyno Results

I figured the chip and the exhaust would have given 12-15 RWHP. Even at that, $700+ for chip, t-stat and exhaust is about $50 per HP. From what I have read here most stock Marks are laying down 220 HP. So if I only gained 10 HP, that's some expensive HP:$$ ratio.

RE: Dyno Results

The only problem is that you didn't dyno the car beforehand. You could have very well gained 20+ HP as some marks are putting down closer to 200, than 220. I think my numbers were around 210-212 bone stock. I put down 228HP and 253TQ on my last dyno run, so your car seems about on par with mine. This was after a fresh plug change that netted me 9 HP. I did two back to back runs, changed the plugs after the first one and immediately gained 9 HP - more than the chip and exhaust combined.

I think the best bang for buck performance wise has got to be headers, gears, converter, tires, and of course a fresh set of plugs.

RE: Dyno Results

Without the baseline dyno it's difficult to say what is the actual gain on your car ... They all differ, so saying that stock mark lays down 220hp is off. RPC chips as well as all the others don't really give you advertised 25hp or so increase. Actually, I think Dennis said one in of the chip debates that he makes no hp claims. It's the shift points and other stuff that helps you get the most out of your Mark.

RE: Dyno Results

Thanks fellas! I'm good with the plugs. My entire tune up with FMS 9MM wires and the Denso Iridium plugs is only 2K miles old. Kale, I agree that the best bang for the buck mods are the ones you mentioned. I'm going to do all those mods before the end of 2004. Jeremi, I strongly agree with you on the comments about the chip. I made a post last month or so, that I didn't really feel any more power, but I felt the drivability improve. I guess what is so surpising is that a car this heavy with 3.07/8 gears moves very well for 230 RWHP. I just figured it would be more.

RE: Dyno Results

Those aren't bad numbers. The '93 totally stock Mark VIII's right down to the "water heater" sized muffles usually did 205 to 210 rwhp and most people feel those were the strongest from the factory before mods. My '95 LSC first did 228 rwhp with only a Superchip and mufflers about five years ago. At the track, I did 14.6 at 97+ mph in 85 degree weather so while the horses may not be "many", they pull like Budwiser Clydesdales.

RE: Dyno Results

I feel better now. Thanks. I made a mistake in my 1st post. My torque was actually 253.5. Maybe if I keep reading it, I'll gain more horsepower! LOL.

RE: Dyno Results

I'd love too. My scanner has been a bit finicky (sp) lately. I'll try to get it up and running soon. I'm getting ready to go to Yuma AZ in the AM to train the reserves for 3 weeks, so it may be a while. I did, however, report my run to Dennis Reinhart yesterday and he told me that he can re-tune my chip and get even better numbers! Basically, he said he could put a bit more advance in the timing. I really don't want to mess with the AWESOME fuel curve. I mean this curve is dead on 13.1 and flat...unbelievable..

ponyfreak, You da man!! Thanks. What do you think? It was my first time at the dyno. Sad, but true. I've been at this hot rod thing for about 25 years and never dyno'd any of my cars.

RE: RE%3A Dyno Results

I think that the a/f looks really good. Looks like you had some problems on the first run. Something wierd was going on with your torque numbers. Maybe they snugged the car down a little more.

THe second run looks good. Torque is consistantly high. I thought with a number that high it would have peaked and dropped back down, but it is a nice curve for the mods you have.

RE: RE%3A Dyno Results

Well, on the first run, one of the straps came loose, not off, but loose. Also, the car was in 25 degree weather for 3.5 hours then pulled in, shut off, then ran. I think the engine, trans and rear end was ice cold. Correction, they were ice cold. The second run was 3 minutes later. It was a bit warmer, but I still don't think it was warm enough. Might have gotten better numbers if the drivetrain was at normal operating temperature. Ponyfreak, you have some experience with dyno testing I see. This is my first, so I'm not exactly up to par, so to speak. Thank you for your observations. I wish I had my underdrive pulley on before the run. I have them, I'm just not sure what to do about the little canister component in front of the crank pulley. I'm sure with the reduced size of the new one, it will interfere. Any tips there would be appreciated.

RE: RE%3A Dyno Results

ELi has underdrive pullies on his 96. He does not have a problem with them hitting the air injection.

If somehow your pullies are different or something you could take the air injection off but you will most likely get a check engine code and will have to have a chip to take it off.

I think underdrive pullies are more problems than they are worth IMO.
There are a lot of of other things to do with your money than underdrive pullies. Some people swear by them, but I am not convinced. Yes they will help out a little, but in an everyday driver I do not think the consequenses are worth the extra little power.
