Engine Temp Sensor Err

Today I got an "Engine Temp Sensor Err" message (or something real similar) about a minute after starting my car. I drove home, gauge never moved.

Where is that sensor? Up on top by the alternator?

Would anything bad of happened if I drove it the rest of the way to work? Something like the cooling fans not coming on?

Thanks in advance.

The engine coolant temp sensor is located in the coolant crossover tube which wraps up and over the alternator.

Was the error intermittent or did it stay on?

If the cooling fan does not come on, the car will likely be ok at speeds above 45 mph, but below 45 mph the cooling fan will need to operate to prevent overheating.

It stays on until I reset it. Resetting and running the "self diagnostic" got me a CEL. Engine temp data err is exactly what it said. It did it again this morning and had a CEL PO118 Engine Coolant Temp Circuit High Input code after I hit the self diagnostic button.

Oh, unplugging the sensor in the crossover just to the passenger side of the alternator and starting the car with it unplugged the car stumbled a little on start up and it created a few codes. PO02B Pending, PO39F Pending, BO900 Pending, U3D01 Pending, PO003 Pending. I cleared them restarted, the car ran fine and went back to the PO118 only.

Mercifully I have an old Intrepid I can drive also so I don't need to push it if the fan is going to stay off. I like my old peeling paint stuck in my place driver's seat MarkVIII :) We've had a good 10 years together!
