exhaust smell

I've always noticed the smell of exhaust in my mkviii with the sun roof tilted up. is this normal(anything above 35 mph)

If your smelling exhaust in your car that's a bad thing.

the sun roof being open creates a vacuum inside the car, and if you have an exhaust leak it will/can pull carbon monoxide into the car.

suspect leak area might be the EGR tube? possibly?
Since the EGR tube is in front of the cabin, the vacuum created by the sunroof being open could easily pull exhaust fumes in via the grommets in the drivers side footwell.

I'm sure we dont need to express the dangers involved w/Carbon Monoxide poisioning...be careful.

If you smell exhaust your definately getting Carbon Monoxide in the cabin.

if the egr tube were leaking would'nt I have an exhaust leak sound or whistle? (I assume this is not normal?) recently I was scanning my comp. and getting 10v ref voltage to E.C.M.and had 20v syst. voltage (&%#$@!!! autozone Alt.) and had my hood open gooseing the throttle to see if it varied or the regulator would kick in. I did'nt have any exhaust leaks then.(by the time I took the alt. to A.Z. every thing was back to normal) could the exhaust be coming from the trunk area? anyone know if there are vents in the trunk(I've noticed the smell there in the past) needless to say I don't pop-up my sunroof! sucks too I prefer it over A.C.!

Shouldn't take but a few minutes on a lift to determine if the exhaust is leaking, including the EGR tube.

put car on jackstands (no access to lift) started eng. I started at the front with 2' piece of garden hose listening at connections the only leak I can find is at the drivers side exhaust tip! not sure how it could get inside car? side note I installed a spoiler(unpopular) now I can open my sun roof without any smell (brother noticed the sun roof poped-up was quieter than before) he also has a mark viii. any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated!

I never had any problem with my sunroof and exhaust smell, maybe you have a hole in the body underneath and its pulling it in? Seems wierd, but its gone now. :D

I've never liked things that fix themselves (at best the spoiler is a band aid) just masking the real problem. guess I'll drop the exhaust weld the leak in the tip unbolt spoiler and see if that gets it! (I realize carbonmonoxide is oderless so to actually smell it .its bad and is probably not totally gone.) I think I'll order an inexpensive tester from work(boat mech.) to see if I get it fixed!
