Hi,

I’m checking around where I can bring my car to get the exhaust done, I’ve called, and brought my car around to a few places but NO ONE WILL REMOVE MY THRID CAT I'm PISSED! I even said what if I removed it, they said, it don't matter they'll have too put the third cat back on an if not there is $2500 fine., this really sucks, I know when I take the car for the smog test all they do is the sniff test, no visual check. Not sure what to do,

I live in Wisconsin, near Illinois border, anyone know someplace would do this?

RE: exhaust third cat!

Tell them it is a resonator, I believe if you look in the book it is under the exhaust system parts and not emissions like the other cats.

If you take it off before you go, it may. Also if you have the manuals you can show them, they call it a Dual Converter Y Pipe not a Catalytic Converter, but it is.

You did not say what year you have, this is a base 96:

RE: exhaust third cat!

Rick

RE: exhaust third cat!

Hack it out and jerry rig a Y pipe. Take it to them and say you want new cat-back dual exhaust. ;)

RE: exhaust third cat!

go buy a sawzal and cut it out and take it to the shop... then ask them to fix it cause you where going to try it your self but could not..

RE: exhaust third cat!

Tell them to install a Flowmaster there and put straight pipes in the back where the mufflers are, they shouldn't have a problem with it.

Or...........

Cut out the Y Cat and tell them you hit a HUGE rock and you had to cut it out cuz it was dragging on the ground!

Play stupid, that always works the best.

RE: exhaust third cat!

if you remove the center piece when you go in just make up a story and they will not care that the center cat thing is gone...

RE: exhaust third cat!

Ok, if you haven't done anything yet, do what I did, cut off the pipe right after the 3rd cat, break apart the substrate and occationally start the car and "blow" out all the pieces, then once all the pieces are out, drive it the exhaust shop and have them take out the resonator and weld it back together, also have them cut the pipe off real close to the flange where the rear section bolts on, it is really small right there. I just had the mufflers removed and punched out the 3rd cat and had tips installed and it sounds bad ass!!

RE: exhaust third cat!

I find it hard to believe you are having these problems in WI. I think you just need to find another shop that will do it. Show them pictures of Dan's exhaust if you have to.

BTW, When I had mine done, I originally had a budget of $500....had I not had some parts that my exhaust guy wanted, I wold have had almost $1k into it when all said and done. I ended up re-using a muffler I had on my truck though too (Magnaflo DI/DO, 5x8x18").
