Failed emission test... questions

I failed the low speed emission test. I have 2 cats punched out and a 3rd cat that's brand new. Now before we have a flame war let me state that I have been told by several well versed people in the mark viii crowd that this setup should pass emissions.

Problems: 1. one of my front (hollow) cats has a hole in it. ... I'll have to get that fixed
Problem 2. I'd like to get some of that engine cleaning junk and put it in my car. I think it's called sea foam but I'm not sure. I've been told, once again by well versed people that it should go in the gas and the engine and it will produce a very large cloud of black smoke showing you the engine has been cleaned.

... anyone know the name of this stuff?

Also what else could I do to get my car running cleaner. Do coil packs have anything to do with this part of the engine performance?

RE: Failed emission test... questions

Where is the vacume intake that I put this stuff into?

I need a detailed description please.

Here's the engine.

What I've read leads me to beileve that I must do the following:

1. Put about half a bottle into the pcv valve slowly while car is idling.
2. Let car sit for 5 minutes.
3. Put entire bottle in gas tank and drive for several hundred miles.
4. change oil

Is that right?

RE: Failed emission test... questions

That's about right, except I wouldn't drive the car any distance with it in the oil. It will break down the oil to nothing. Put a can in the crankcase, let it idle for about five minutes, then replace oil and filter.

RE: Failed emission test... questions

NOT the PCV valve. ::nono::

SeaFoam is best used as an induction cleaner. That is through the intake, valves, combustion chambers... so you need to distribute it in the intake as even as possible to all the cylinders.

There is a tee fitting atop the engine near center. A large hose goes to the drivers side and a small hose to the passenger side. These are vacuum lines. Carefully disconnect the small line and attach a piece of vacuum hose. Pour 1/3 can of SeaFoam into suitable container. Use the attached hose and suck up the SeaFoam into the engine without stalling. Shut car off. Leave set 5 minutes and reattach original vacuum line. Pour remaining SeaFoam into fuel tank. Start engine and run the snot out of it.

BTW - it will be gray-white smoke to nearly no smoke if it is 'clean'.

You can use it in the oil, but I personally would not.

I disconnected the small line and it cracked. xo Had to tape that up first.

This is what it looks like now. Am I doing it right?

RE: Failed emission test... questions

Nope - hook up to the fitting at the tee where you disconnected it. It will have suction when you run the engine. Don't fret over the cracked line - you can splice it with a piece of vacuum hose over the break later.

RE: Failed emission test... questions

i unhooked the hose to the PCV valve and sucked it up through there. Worked pretty good. Ended up with quite the smokescreen.

Wow... that's some cloud it spits out.

Anyway... mechanic says I have to replace my cats. Anyone in houston willing to help me out with putting some cats on my car at a price that won't cost an arm and a leg?

Also, could someone recommend me some cats?
