FNG here!

I just wanted to say hello to everyone. I have been reading on this website for the past 3 months. I wanted to be better educated on the Mark VIII before I asked any questions. I really only have one; Why don't Mark owners have their driveshafts re-balanced and new U-joints installed instead of replacement when they up-grade gears? It appears to be a serviceable driveshaft. I'm having a tough time understanding why everyone says they vibrate after changing gears. I've been a hot rodder for years (25 or so) and never experienced this before. I'm still running the 3.07's, but will go to 4.10's in the spring, or upon return from Afghanistan/Iraq.
I took someone's advise in this forum and went to www.flatratetech.com and got the CD ROM for $20 on the 96 Ford cars. Well worth it if you haven't done it yet. Anyway, here is a pic of my 96 Mark. I haven't gotten my plate yet, however, it reads "LXRYSVT". I have done some intake work to the car and an exhaust. I have also given it a through tune up with Autolite's and the FMS 9MM red plugwires. A little pricey, but you get what you pay for. Sorry the post is so long. Three months worth of bottled up thoughts.

Well, I guess I can't post an image. It has to be turned on.

WELCOME

RE: FNG here!

The shafts are a two piece design, and can't be balanced at all RPM's. There is a "shaft within a shaft" or something of that sort. When they spin too fast they hit their natural frequency, and they vibrate.

Welcome!

RE: FNG here!

Hi welcome to the club. THat's not such a long post ;)

I didn;t really believe I would need a new driveshaft after I went to 4.10s, but I did.

94 Mark VIII, Black / Black
dynoed at 247.5hp / 259.7ft-lb!

RE: FNG here!

Thanks for the insight on the driveshaft. I didn't realize it was set up like that. From the outside of it you can't tell it has an internal counter-balance shaft. Well, the MMDS looks like it will have to be the ticket. How do you get the "images" portion turned on? I'd like to post a picture. It's a Pearl White 96 w/tan interior, 65K on the clock. Bought it from a retired female school teacher for 6K. I thought it was too good to pass up. I was originally looking for a mustang, however, the wife said "You already have an SVO, I don't want another mustang, it's not practical" She doesn't realize that it is a luxury mustang. Anyway, please advise on posting a photo. Thanks.

RE: FNG here!

I am going to try to send my 93 1 piece of and have it balanced. 50 bucks beats the hell outta 500, and the shop builds aluminum shafts for rail cars and 8 second cars so they should be able to handle it.

RE: FNG here!

Welcome and congrats on the '96 Mark VIII.

The '93 driveshafts are a one piece design, usually not suspect to vibration issues of the later 2 piece models. Some have used a '93 driveshaft to replace theirs on later models.

You can't just post a photo. The pic first must be on a website. Then it is just a matter of copying and pasting the link into the message post.

Right click on the sig pic below, select properties and you will see the address of the site where the pic is hosted. Example:
"www.lincolnsclub.org/users/driller/pics/duo_sig03.jpg" (omit the quotes).

RE: FNG here!

RE: FNG here!

Sgt Halpin
I'm in San Antonio as well. Retired TSGT USAF -- photojournalist. Lets hook up some time and I can tell you all about my last duty assignment working on A Navy base, working for an Army captain, and leading a staff of army, navy, air force, marine and coast guard enlisted folks. Talk about your Joint Task Force.

RE: FNG here!

yah, I need to find someone who has experience w/the Mark VIII, as far as joint environment, I work with Army, Air Force, Navy and the rest of my company of Marines. It is a joint environment and I HATE IT. Ive been here 4 years now. Can one of the Gunny's get me some orders outta here!!!!

RE: FNG here!

As I recall, you are a "crypto guy," right? I don't know your monitor, however, my collateral duty is career planning. You also had a secondary as motor "t"? I don't know that monitor either. If you tell me what you wanna do and where you wanna go, perhaps I could get in touch with him and make that happen. No promises, but find out his name and I'll do the rest. As far as an earlier question about your computer. If you are refering to the type of computer, it's an OBD-1 series. Other than that, the codes should be on the computer if you are looking to chip it. We will have to hook up sometime. My wifes family lives in San Antonio.

RE: FNG here!

yah, 4 MOS's and Ive been here 4 years. The monitor is MGySgt Russman, and I hear theyre not giving orders until after the new year. I am crypto, a morse code guy actually and a Motor T mech. Those were good times, sleeping under the HMMWV. The best was road testing them!!! I've just been waiting for orders and trying to deploy... We support the Operating Forces, and because I dont have the GOV credit card I'm non-deployable...... Hoorah Gunny!!!

RE: FNG here!

Let's see if this works. I added a link to my sig. If all goes well, the pics of my Mark should be there. Any probs, let me know. Thanks.
