Gas prices set record on penny-a-day climb

I'm surprised by all this. Last year when they first reached $2... everyone cried and cried, and then prices declined. Now when they are almost 30 cents higher no one cares, or so it seems. Here in cali we have to pay at least $2.59-2.79 in many places over $3 for premium. (Gas stations along the major highway I5 are $3 for REGULAR). That is about $50 to fill up the mark now, not so long ago it was in the low 30s... when you do a lot of driving this really hurts in the wallet.
Btw have you looked at Oil companys income/profits lately... strangely they have almost doubled ::roll::.
There is a point to these prices beeing so high. They are supposed to encourage a switch to alternatives and let us know that gas is going to run out eventually. So I guess there is no point in complaining.

Dammit, i'm going to be paying $3 a gallon on the water this summer and burning 20 gallons an hour. That's more than a dollar per mile.

Thats scary man.

My worst case scenario would be selling the Vic, and going back to a compact car for my all-weather driver. I had two compacts in a row before the Vic, and was glad to be rid of the small cars. The only benefit is their gas mileage!

I will not sell the Mark over these gas prices, but I may have to give up having big cars all the time x( It really stinks; the small cars are uncomfortable because of their size, and I never felt safe in them (vs truck, etc in an accident). My husband is too tall to ride in a compact ::roll::

RE: Gas prices set record on penny-a-day climb

man am I glad I kept the 4 cyl in my boat. Was gonna pull it and put in an 8 cyl for this summer. Think I am going to keep the 4 and see if I can put a supercharger on it and do some other mods instead. I can spend the entire day on my boat and not burn more than 15 gallons.

If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests?

RE: Gas prices set record on penny-a-day climb

Pretty soon, driving on the freeway will be like running a restrictor plate race in NASCAR. no one will "lift" to save fuel, and the pile-ups will get worse, and more frequent.

I have had it. There is NO reason a hard-working citizen of this country should be subjected to the almost criminal price gouging we have been faced with.(BTW, paid $2.79/gallon this morning-thanks california)

First it was an energy crisis. Then its a drought...now its a gas issue.
Its very aggrivating. I shouldnt have to drive some wind-up electric death trap just to save my money. My car gets better gas mileage than a poorly tuned 4-cylinder econobox, so its not like I would be better off with some little death-trap.

If you ask the gas station owner why his prices are going up every day, do you know what his answer will be? "because the station acorss the street went up".

Folks...its time for a revolution. This needs to be stopped.

I just wish the country wouldnt come to a complete halt, if there was NO transportation(by private cars/trucks/suv's) for one day...let the greedy gas station owners go broke...see how it feels.

I commute 100 miles a day. There is no reason I should have to leave a job I have been at for 9 years, just because of the greedy folks who sell gas.

That's ok...one of these days, they'll get theirs. Oh, and we all know what happens next-gas goes up, so do prices of everything that requires gas to transport.

Oh no!!! That means the cost of beer will go up!!!! The humanity of it all!!!!

That's it! Ron...find me a house...I am moving back to canada. Who cares if their healthcare system is bad, right?

This was in yesterday's news - Walmart is #1 in sales, while Exx on is #1 in PROFITS: (I had to type "Exx on" because if you type it regular, you get this smilie - Exxon)
---------------------
Wal-Mart was No. 1 sales on the Fortune 500 for the fourth straight year, with 2004 sales of more than $288.19 billion, up about 11 percent from 2003.

Exx on Mobil Corp. ranked second again with $270.77 billion in sales, up a stunning 27 percent from '03 as the price of oil rose above $50 a barrel and gasoline sold for more than $2 a gallon. The company also topped Fortune's profits charts for the second year in a row with $25.3 billion in earnings, breaking the record set by Ford Motor Co. in 1998.
---------------------

$25.3 BILLION in 2004 profits!! And they say they're not gouging...

RE: Gas prices set record on penny-a-day climb

Man this sucks. Prices in NY are getting there as well. $2.55 for the good stuff. I have 3 gas hogs and 1 that is okay on gas. Right now I am spending about $150/week on gas.

Could be worse though. I hear that the price of gas in Europe is well over the price we pay here.

RE: Gas prices set record on penny-a-day climb

Canadians pay more too. Our gas is cheap, comparatively.

RE: Gas prices set record on penny-a-day climb

the prices are over $6 a gallon in europe. But we americans have the WORST public transportation!!! Here in cali you can't go anywhere without a car... Everyone has drive for miles... where as in europe there is public transportation wherever you want to go. It is not like they don't like cars... but you only need 1 per household where as americans average 2.5.

RE: Gas prices set record on penny-a-day climb

Downtown Chicago is getting up close to $3 for premium. If i was Mobile or Shell, I would start charging $1.90/gallon and EVERYONE would buy there gas from there. Why hasn't anyone done that? It would make me happier, and the gas company, maybe, happier. I just wish the mark ran on water. Maybe soon enough.

Gas is a commodity and it is sold at a wholesale price.

No, it is a commodity, and that is why one oil company would not be able to sell it $1 less then the others.

While it's at a record high in real dollars, it is not at a record when you adjust for inflation. And we're still paying less than the rest of the world.

Gas prices set record on penny-a-day climb

Tue Apr 5, 8:24 AM ET

By James R. Healey, USA TODAY

The average price of regular gas has zoomed to a record $2.217 a gallon, the government reported Monday, up 6.4 cents from a week ago, continuing the climb of nearly a penny a day that began five weeks ago.

It's the third consecutive weekly record reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Nationwide averages could hit $2.35 if wholesale gas continues to hover around $1.70 a gallon, according to analysts' rule of thumb that retail prices are 60 to 65 cents higher than wholesale.

Expect a peak "somewhere north of $2.25," says Tom Kloza, veteran analyst at the Oil Price Information Service.

Prices rose in all regions of the country. Biggest jump: 8.8 cents in California, to $2.464. That's the highest on the mainland. Hawaii's usually higher, but EIA doesn't report it separately.

Adjusted for inflation, gas would have to hit $2.99 a gallon for a record.

Record aside, the price of gas already is creating financial hardship for 58% of Americans, according to a USA TODAY/CNN/Gallup Poll taken by phone over the weekend. That's the highest percentage, by far, who've called it a hardship since USA TODAY began asking the gas-price question five years ago.

The next-highest was 49% saying gas prices were a hardship last June, shortly after then-record prices of around $2.06 hit the USA.

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Nearly half of those polled - 48% - said they already have cut driving to reduce their fuel bills, and 38% say they've trimmed other household spending.

On the other hand, half of those who said gas prices aren't a problem said it would take at least $3 a gallon to become one. Margin of error in that sample is plus or minus 5 percentage points.

High gas prices are translating to fewer SUV sales but aren't hurting sales of full-size pickups, which typically use more gas. "It has been interesting to me that SUV customers seem to be willing to make some changes, but pickup truck owners are not," says Stephen Lyons, Ford Motor vice president.

RE: Gas prices set record on penny-a-day climb

Gas prices in Toronto have gotten silly lately. Prices have climbed from 83.9/litre to 91.9/litre in 2 weeks. That's almost .32/US gallon - despite the fact that the Canadian $ has been climbing against the US $ and oil prices are quoted in US $.

On top of this, prices at the pump start at 91.9 in the morning and drop to 85.9 by 9:00 PM, then shoot back up again at midnight - EVERY DAY!! This madness would not be possible without computerized gas pumps and signs - can you imagine taking pump readings & climbing a ladder to manually change the sign every hour? Pity the fool who forgets to fill his tank in the evening & finds him/herself on empty on the way to work in the morning!

By the way, CDN$ 91.9/litre = US$ 2.85/gallon. :(

while this is true, it still doesnt change the fact that the rapid increase is based on greed. period. I know we pay less than anywhere else in the world, but I am referring to california, which costs consumers on average 60 cents MORE per gallon than anywhere else in the country. This defies explanation.

Furthermore, although we do pay less than anywhere else in the world, it doesnt explain the rapid increase in price. 7 weeks ago, gas in my area was at $1.97/gallon. Now it is above $2.85/gallon. In 7 weeks. explain that.

inflation does influence pricing, but not at a rate of 50% increase in 50 days.

The station I drive by every morning was at $1.97/gallon for premium on feb 25. Today it was at $3.07/gallon. There is a "cheap-o" station across the street from that station. They are currently at $2.69/gallon, yet I saw folks gassing up at the higher-priced station. This is the crap that needs to stop. The station with the rip-off rates needs to suffer for a few days with very little business. As long as idiots keep going there, they wont drop the prices. problem is, most of them put it on their credit card...this add's interest charges, making the gas cost even more.

it is going to be up to the people. We can control the pricing. But as long as folks continue to pay the high-prices, and feed the rich man(pardon the epxression), things wont change.

if I am selling lemonaide on the street for $5.00 glass, and Joe jr. is selling lemonaide for $4.00 glass across the street, why would you buy any from me? If I cant sell any lemonaide, I have no choice but to drop my prices. But as long as people keep buying from me, I wont have to. I know there are factors involved, like quality of gasoline, lines, traffic, payment methods, so unless it's the convenience factor, it is going to keep getting worse.

lazy people who dont have time to wait at the pump, or dont want to stand in line to get gas...they are partially to blame too. They arent helping this situation. They pull into a near-empty station, comment to themselves about the rediculously high prices, then proceed to pump their car up. DUH! the place is empty for a reason... they charge too much! Quit paying them!!!

Ok...I need to lay down...I have a gas-ache.

I believe Venezuela and countries in the middle east like Saudi Arabia pay less for gas at the pump then we do.
