"gear display data error" on 97 Mark VIII

Hi, I've got the same problem on my '97 Mark. I too suspected the MLPS but had the code read at Autozone and they said it was a code for the electronic pressure control solenoid. Mine was stuck in a position which caused the trans to have low pressure and the manual says not to do a "stall" -like a powerbrake- or the direct clutch will slip. I bought a later model solenoid to replace it, its $40+ cheaper and gives you a 20 psi increase throughout its operating range but you have to adapt the wires to fit it, it's made to connect to the printed circut board on the newer trannys. I found all this info on the TCCOA site in the article by Jerry on the 4r70w. I havent put it in yet but I bought all 3 solenoids from Ford with the seperator plate gaskets and accumulator pistons and springs, and a case of Mercon5, $280 all together. Might as well do everything while I'm in there. I plan on drilling the sep. plate to improve the shifting, just to the mild level described in Jerrys article.
Have the code read and see if we're in the same boat. The sol. can throw 2 codes, stuck open or closed.
