getting painted

My wife asked me what I wanted for my birthday, and after making the usual perverted request, I told my wife that we already had everything I wanted that we could afford. Then, proving once again second wives are the best wives, she suggested I get my car painted. :big-grin:

It's a black 94. I actually had it painted a few years ago, had some hail dmg and a guy in the neighborhood did it in his home shop :/ well you get what you pay for. But then worse it got some damage to one of the wheel wells and now needs some reconstructive surgery to the top edge of the well and also along the bottom under the door is rusty.

SO what's the best way to go about getting this work done? What should a good paint job cost (including the body work)? How can I tell who does good work? Anyone have any referrals in the Omaha area?

emailing local shops, they are not wanting to tuch the rust damage, and one guys just told me paint ALONE would be $3500 evne if there was no rust. REALLY? 3500??

For $3500 I WOULD drive to Florida and have Jamie do it! :D

My personal fear of getting the Mark done is not getting it done right. Its hard to find a shop that really cares to do a good pain job around here. There are good shops, but no great shops. I am sure I will settle for something local that will "have to do".

6,000 with body work and paint OMG maybe I need to learn how to fix the rust myself LOL

but that was from the place known to be overpriced... a couple shops just refuse, they only want to do insurance collision claims.

Maybe I need one place to do the rust and another to paint it.

Do they get rust in Florida? Have you ever seen rust Jamie?? LOL

I think I need to start looking at the smaller independant shops, but how do I know who is good and who is BSing me?

I was just reading aobut someting called "spray welding" Rustbusters LLC

it looks interesting but still investigating. Is it a sign from God that in their promotional video there's a Black Gen 1 mark 8 just like mine???

If you feel safe, I say go to a local Vo-tech school and have the students paint it.

I had this done on my 77 Lincoln, the paint looked great for several years before I sold it. The rust repairs only lasted about 3 years but they only used bondo rather then cutting and replacing the metal. The job cost me $700.

In Sept this is where my Mark is going so I will keep you all updated on it.

no rust on cars here, if there is, they live on the water, or the cars are brought it from out of state, if i could get 3500 for a paint job i'd have 100 cars lines up right now, thats insane. i'd paint it for you any day, but unless you can plan at least a 2 week vacation here, i couldnt do it. hell, even if you drove here, left it with me, and spent 2 weeks here, you would probably still not spend 3500 lol. did you see the two marks i just painted?

You do a damn fine job painting the marks... wet sanding too! Your crazy man! :D I wish you did live closer, I would have you paint mine in a heart beat. I suppose I could ship it! :)

well since i totally screwed myself on the last two, i wont paint anything for under a grand now. thats materials brought to me, paint, clear, sealer if needed. not the little crap like tape and masking paper and stuff, but i'll do a car for a grand. no more 400 to 600 dollar screw myself's lol.

For that you could have a Florida trip AND have Jamie paint your car!!
Well that would be ok if you want to leave it with him for over a week or so, cause he turned me down on a job because I would only be able to leave the car with him for 5 days. I even offered to say with him for a day to prep it.

thats right. because i am a one man operation and everything thinks i sit in my shop and wait for work to come in the door, that shop is my job, and i do numerous projects at the same time i cannot pull off painting a car in 5 days unless you want a paint job like maaco. i also have a wife and 2 young kids, i have a family, i cannot stay in my shop for 12 hours a day just to get something done super fast to make the customer happy, i have other priorities in my life and when something comes up at home, the shop door gets closed no matter what is inside. maybe people can pull off a paint job in 5 days, but i cant, and i wasnt going to try it, if i feel rushed, i will not do the job, i do things very thoroughly, if its my name on it, i want it done my way and the right way. it was nothing personal towards you at all, your deadline and my common sense said it wouldnt work so i turned you down, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, better to turn someone away then to have an unhappy customer in the end.

Yay! I found a local guy to do mine. He does show cars but I never had the balls to ask him, he is know to be pretty damn good so I figured $$$. He is asking $800, that includes all the supplies, black paint and three clear coats. He will also panel paint the car so trunk lid, fenders, doors.... . everything that can come off will.

The catch is that I will be doing all the prep work. I have to remove all the fixtures. But I have a friend to help. Going to shave the door handles and remove the antenna mast.

Guess it pays to ask around, you never know!

I've had a 5-day paint job before... that's one of the reasons I need paint now!

If I had 2 weeks, Jamie, I would seriously be on top of that! Nothing I would like better than someone who specializes in M8s to do the work!

However I did go visit the spray-weld guy. He owns a shop that does classic restorations (a good sign)(not insurance collision work). he showed me some work in progress and some finished products - examples of the spray weld. It looked great.

We looked at my car and the rust damage is not on anything structural so it's a good candidate for the spray-weld. We also looked over the entire car and we're not going to paint the entire thing. Since it is black and was painted (mediocrelly) onyl a few years ago, he is gong to paint the quarter panel and under the doors, and do some touch ups and re-finishing on the rest of the car. I think this will be a great project, and will take about 10 days and about $2000, half of which is for the rust repairs.

We start next Monday.
