Headers installed (Vid and pics)

RE: Headers installed (Vid and pics)

Eli I know you worked long and hard on that install, and I credit you for that , but I see problems with the heat on the starter and the steering joint...and probable banging on the chassis..I have Kooks on my car and they don't have any of those clearance problems..I wish I could show some pics but I don't have a camera..maybe Geno one day can get a pic or two to see..I have to agree with him also , the Kooks headers make for a cleaner and easier install , without the clearance problems....

RE: Headers installed (Vid and pics)

John,
did you ever finish the full exhaust with mufflers ? how's the sound with the three muffs ? Thanx.

RE: Headers installed (Vid and pics)

Me and about 500 other people with MAC's and BBK longtubes on the 4.6 DOHC have the same clearance on the starter. Noone has had any problems yet that I know of. I have not had any problems with the 20,000 miles I have put on my mark VIII's with the steering joint and headers.

I think Eli learned the hard way that midlengths will never make the torque of longtubes.

Today's lesson in math is:

longtubes > midlengths or shorties

RE: Headers installed (Vid and pics)

How much were they? Also, was the swap worth it?

Midlengths, preferrably longtubes will offer you more HP/gas milease/torque gains than any other mod you can put on the car, other than heads/cams, or power adders IMO. Coupled with the exhasut system they should be the first mod for any car since they help in so many area's, and are very high on the bang for the buck list.

Had the kooks been available I would have picke dthose up in an instant. However, they were not when I started this project. The clearance on the starter should not be a problem. It is far enough away it should not be of any concern. The steering joint will have its clearance increased very soon. The only thing I have a problem with is the fact that the tranny cooler lines rest on the header. That needs to be fixed RIGHT AWAY. You should get ahold of a camera so I can see what your install looks like. I agree they should be the first mod on any car, so I am looking into it for my wife's Mark.

Jeremi
I did get the mufflers installed in the rear , it has become a lot nicer for me to drive now ...how do I describe....Its probably too quiet for the racers , but it has a nice mellow sound and when you get on it it sounds good...I still have a drone when in OD ,light throttle, under load...If you remove from OD and the RPM comes up a little it goes away..gears would help this also..I can still take the wife to a fine restaurant , without everyone turning to look , and I can still enjoy the deep throaty sound over half throttle.Hows that ?

RE: Headers installed (Vid and pics)

That's kind of what I wanted to hear. I didn't want the obnoxious sound, yet a bit louder that regular dual exhaust setup is fine with me. WIth 4.10s I have it should be fine then. What kind of mufflers did you use ? You also have the cats right ?
Also, what kind of air injection fittings are you talking about in the other post? I know there are two small hoses on the EGR tube, but anything else on the manifolds ?

RE: Headers installed (Vid and pics)

Not hard at all. You need the "d" shaft that is a part of your rag joint though. It attaches to the steering column.

RE: Headers installed (Vid and pics)

I would get some stock of 3/4 DD shaft if you plan to do this. I can steal the DD shaft off of the stock joint, but it is pretty difficult, and if you do not do it just right it will be like Peter and end up being too short. You have to use a torch/Pamsa cutter, some skill, and a grinder to be able to get the stock DD off and use it. Even then it is REALLY close to being long enough.

RE: Headers installed (Vid and pics)

i have seen the direct replacement shaft from then before so it would require not modifaction. i dont know if they still have it or not. other wise you will have to go buy some DD shaft and cut and weld it.

RE: Headers installed (Vid and pics)

So if i get that part number, i can avoid all cutting and welding? I can weld okay, but i don't have a welder, and i'm not about to weld my own steering shaft (don't trust myself that much).

Is that part the u-joint and shaft, or what?

RE: Headers installed (Vid and pics)

that is for the billit steering joint. they also have one with rubber in it so the vibration is not as bad but not every one cares. with the muffler joe has i am not shure he could tell or not.

RE: Headers installed (Vid and pics)

that part is just for the U joint. I just checked my last summit order and that is the model that i got. YOu will have to get some DD shaft. YOU DO NOT have to weld it. What you need to do is just drill some holes for the set screws then locktight them in there. I have put 3 of these togeather and not one of them did I weld. IT is not necessary.

Dave, I would get that part number, then get some 3/4" DD shaft, you only need 3" or less then stick it in the shaft, get a drill press drill down into the DD shaft 3/16" or so and then put you set screws in. I believe Steve strapp has a joint that I made for the pearl car for sale. Might want to check with him.

Dave, if you want, just come down here and we'll help you out. We need to get together anyway
