hey Mike (mlschultz)? How is that SL?

Max, The SL is a great car. I think I have had that car for a couple years now, and have had really no big problems with it since purchased. It now has 136k miles on it. The only down side is normal maintenance parts availability. I have a 96 R129 chassis SL, and I have to order air filters - both engine and cabin. I was down on hydraulic fluid, and had to drive 50 miles round trip to the Mercedes dealer to pick up a litre of fluid for $23 bucks.

I do not regret buying the car one bit. It has ample trunk space, silky smooth ride, handles extremely well, and stops on a dime. The R230 chassis SL you are considering has one thing I wish mine had - a retractable hard top... Mine has both a soft and a hard top. I have the same R230 wheels on my SL, as are on the car in your cl link, and they look real nice.

They are very well built, and do not have the typical body flex that most convertibles have, and since the R230 is a hard top, wind noise should not be an issue.

Here is a link to the best forum I have found for the SL. Some very interesting conversations and info there, from people all over the world.

Those cars are real nice looking, but I've never cared for the interiors... the doors in particular, I don't like the feel of the door panels, or the sound when they shut...

But, having said that... I've poked at a few, I think I would go for an XLR if I was gonna do a lux 2 seater, way fewer around here and they turn more heads, although I hate the gages. Otherwise my 2 seater of choice would be a vette, plenty of trunk space, and 6sp to boot.

Try and find a SL with the wood wheel and shift knob. :D like the SL CE... :D

He has a Vette, I think he just wants a car from his mother land.

Thanks for the link Mike, I will check it out for sure. Does yours have some kind of gizmicky suspension? That is something that kind of worries me the most about the SL, that and the hard top. I can deal with all other maintenance etc...

Oh and they better not have any flex... these things are HEAVIER than an S class but the same size as a vette :(

Dude you ever close the door on a vette with the window down? lol? It sounds like it bas ball bearings jumping around the plastic door panel.

Oh and I don't like wooden wheels :D

That is a gorgeous SL. My last Benz was a '97 S320 which was in phenomenal condition showing under 45k when I bought it. Actually I take that back, I briefly owned a '72 450 SL after the W140(flipped it). Prior to that I had several 60's-80's Benz's.

Max, I do not have the active suspension option. Just plain old traction control that you can't turn off. At least I have not found a way yet, to turn it off... :) lol My SL weighs more than The Mark.

If thats dirt cheap to you what is expensive?

What is expensive? A brand new SL... lol :)

Max...you're worse than me.
I have been car shopping for 2 straight months now. I was looking for a 2004-2008 Grand Marquis/Crown Vic LX....problem is my HHR is worthless, and I refuse to roll that much negative equity in to a new car loan. Swing me a cash deal on your Vic, and I'll take it off your hands. ;)

I have always liked the SL's...all the way from the early 230 SL's to the newest mega-buck SL's.

I could see you driving one...

I'll keep my eyes open up this way, as they are very popular amoungst the Marin-ites.
