HID *HIGH* beams

I know I'm gettin older but drivin a Mark VIII at night is a challenge. Even with the HID low beams I cant see well. They are too low as if I was huntin for worms. So, with the new HID kits available on the auction sites, I thought "what the hay". I ordered 9005 based 6000K HID's to put in the high beams. The hardest part of the install was where to locate the ballasts. Yes, I know the arent legal and might be blinding to oncoming drivers so I cant just use them any old time. But when I'm alll alone at night out in the boonies - SHAZAM!
Let there be light! And there was! Its a shame I dont own a gen I any more, I'd add them to both the High and the low, after redoing the reflectors. Best $88 I've spent in a while!

For inexperienced mechanics like me, would you please post the specifications and pictures of the product you bought. I would appreciate it a great deal.

I did that to my gen 1 HID housings, HID's in low and high. It is great when nobody else is around. Although you absolutely can't leave them on if there is oncoming traffic, not even for a second, they are incredibly blinding!

Yea those "cheap" HID kits actually have better light output than most other OEM manufacturer spec HIDs.

Here is the kit I just installed for my 96, low-beam, halogen:

Another member got the same kit. We both like them a lot, but from this seller you may want to go 4300k, 6000k was just a hair on the blue side.

Anybody can install. As mentioned the ballast are the hardest part to place, otherwise its plug and play all the way.

No mike, that is not correct. They are 9005 based which in a Gen I is both hi and low, but in a gen II they are for hi only. I dont think anybody makes a replacment for the 9500 HID bulbs. If you would follow the link to the e-bay auction and read the particulars, you will find these bulbs are based to replace various other bulbs and can be ordered for your application. You can also specifiy the color measured in "K's".

What I'm wondering is the start up time for the high beams. Do they come on instantaneously or do they take a second to fire up and brighten like the low beams do? Are you able to flash the lights with these?

I would only recommend high beam use if you do a lot of country driving. These are like any other HID and take a while to light up, about 12 seconds. That also means they will not work for flashing.

My 97 Has one good light, the other is kinda dim - but looks fine from a distance, weird. I still keep getting that annoying check head lamps flashing bull#%$^. Even though they work fine :/ - Even new cars have ridiculously bright headlights, even without brights on. Be careful though, I happen to know that cops look out for people with brights and they will pull you over for DUI suspicion.

IMO that makes these HIDs useless for brights and, in fact, quite dangerous. If I hit my brights I want them NOW not 10 seconds after I hit that deer crossing the road. It would be more practical to install driving lights behind the grill.

I have both driving lights and hid high and low beam. There are trade offs. Although the hid high beams take a few seconds to warm up they still allow you to see more during warm up than halogens.

Ya.... 12 seconds to warm up but they send light out right away. But still, best not to use to flash. Sure, once they are warm they come on right away, but hot strikes are bad for HID. Thats why you need to do the low-beam switch mod.

Maybe you just need to re-adjust your low beams?

My HID's light up very well. Keep in mind HID bulbs get dimmer with age, so replacing old HID bulbs will yield results. I'm not sure what the status is on the bulbs for Marks, but I remember they were scarce.

Just make sure you part in front of a white wall, and reajust the beam.
