Hood Scoop

Okay, i think this is the 3rd time I have posted this and got no response. I ran my car on the 1/8th mile 4 weeks ago. It was running 10.2. This was okay for my first time on the track. Anyways, the engine compartment was extremly hot. So I want to put a real hood scoop on. I need all of your expertise on what might look good. As well as who else has done this and if they have any pics. All feedback would be great.

RE: Hood Scoop

I have only seen two different fiberglass hoods available for the Mark 8. Supercoupe Performance sells both. Of course anything will fit anything if you can do the fiberglass and body work yourself. Just find a ram air scoop you like from Lund, Summitt, or Jegs and graft it onto your stock hood with a hole cut out of the hood for air to enter. It's going to be pretty hard choice with what's out there to not make it look cheesy. The only ram air setup I've seen that i like is that TASCA twin intake ram air that is on Genos prototype Lincoln Mark VIII white car. It is subtle and refined looking enough to be called factory, but works.
I have been pondering the engine compartment cooling issue also. My headers heat it up to twice the heat of a stock manifold it seems when i open hood on hot day. Unbearable to work on it till it cools or sits for an hour or so.
I am thinking more on the lines of a spoiler for the lower front valance that rams air up into the engine compartment. The front grille is pretty much useless for air intake with the radiator, AC condensor, and a F-350 truck tranny cooler all in a row. I am going to mod my factory plastic lower valance with fiberglass to be more rake and wider length so that it hangs down more in front to scoop air in from the bottom.
I have no problem with the exiting of air with the fiberglass Cobra R hood. It's getting cool air inside the engine compartment to blow on the headers that's the problem.

RE: Hood Scoop

Although most header manufacturers say it voids the warranty, how about the DEI header wrap to keep the heat out of the engine bay? I've heard that it will cause headers to rust through quicker. Mine are to be welded to fit, and covering up the welds and pipe differences would be a plus. Anybody using DEI header wrap have a comment here?

RE: Hood Scoop

Thanks for the tips. I ran it again on the drag strip this weekend with the hood off. And now I has LMS 900cfm kit. This was a pretty big difference. It ran alot cooler. Although this has not helped my situation with everyday driving. I will look into the header wraps, any idea where to get one for a mark. Or do you just buy the wrap and put it on yourself?

Thanks

Alex

RE: Hood Scoop

I ordered and installed DEI wireloom wraps for my wires and their version of hood mat they call "hush mat" to protect the painted exterior of my fiberglass hood. Seems funny now that the reason most put the fiberglass hood on is for lighter weight, and now im adding another 8 pounds of 900 degree matting on the underside of it which makes it more heavy than the stocker, but i originally got the hood for more engine clearance anyways.
I like the DEI wraps and have yet to install the DEI peel and stick tape onto my cold air intake pipe i ordered. Will get around to it this weekend i suppose. Supposedly it is good for 950 degress ferinheight protection like the hoodmat is.
I noticed Driller is running somekind of aluminazed wrap on his air intake, maybee he will see this thread.
Im definately going to look into fabbing up a fiberglass ram air scoop for the bottom plastic "curb scraper" trim piece on the bottom of our front bumpers. It will bolt into the same factory holes instead of using the current plastic push pins ford gave us. Which is the reason most of the Marks i see don't have one, they fell off or got scraped off on curbs parking through the years. i know i can get more air up in there and it will make the car look meaner with it lower and angled forward more.

My intake mod is the 'ricer' wrap. :7

It is a ThermoTech 4" Dia. X 36" L lace-on insulation from Summit Racing. P/N 14500

Hey, every lil' bit helps. ;)

I used to have a Thermotech starter wrap. I noticed the other day it never was reinstalled after the header operation. :(

RE: Hood Scoop

Thanks for the feedback. One more question, would you say that the wraps have made a drastic improvement in the tempature of the engine compartment?

Thanks

Alex

One of the tricks I do is remove the rubber seal at the cowl to allow hot air to exit. The best thing I ever did temperature wise was a cooling fan bypass mod. I had forgotten how valuable it was until one day at the track, it didn't work for some reason. After 2 runs I got frustrated and went to the pits to jerry-rig the malfunctioning switch. ;)

I've been looking at the same type setup as youre running on intake pipe. I'm looking for something with velcro edges that can be removed and fits loose over the pipe, as i don't want to stick the stuff directly on it. My IAT sensor sits directly above the rising heat off header which i know is heating up cold air intake being that it is made of aluminum. Anything to keep the heat off of that because it pulls timing when it senses hot air.
