How do I fix a "stuck" caliper bolt?

One of my rear bolts is stuck so it doesn't slide. What can I do to remedy this aside from a new caliper? Thanks

Attempt to remove the slide pin and grease it up with some anti-sieze or wheel bearing grease. Just remove the 13mm bolts on the caliper and move it out of the way and the pins should slide right out....if they don't come out easy, its time for a new caliper bracket. :)

It unscrews out from the back side of the caliper. They can be a little tough to get out so be careful to not go destroying the socket end, These threads typically should have some thread locker on them, a small amount of heat may help. Be careful with any open flames, and don't over heat the bracket.

You're talking about the slide pin, NOT the actual bolt right? If you can't remove the slide pin using a pair of pliers or something of that sort and have to resort to a hammer, than its time for a new bracket. You can try some small taps, and maybe some heat, but usually when they're stuck to the point you can't get them out with vise grips and a vise, than you don't want to use it even if you can get it out.

Yea, the slide pin. I'll have to give it a shot with.the vice grips.

I had one that was stuck and after all of the hammering/heating and still not getting the pin to move I just bought another bracket for $20 at a junkyard.

Mike, if you have a vise, stick it in it and slide the boot up out of the way and spray PB Blaster all up in there and let it soak. Than lightly tap the slide pin in towards the bracket to break the stuff loose, and at the same time use vise grips to attempt to turn it back and forth. If this doesn't work, I HIGHLY advise getting a new/used bracket because if its locked up, just imagine what kinda crap/pitting the inside of that bore will have.

I took mine to a shop who put it in a vise and used a torch to heat it up. Then he worked it out nicely. I greased it up and it works great. Cost like $5.

I'll give it a try, my friggin door handle just broke now, on the passenger side, everytime I fix one thing its on to another.

Haha, reeeeaaaallll good Mike. :D

Whatever approach you take, just inspect the pin and the bore if you're able to remove it, if its pitted make sure you clean it out REALLY good and grease the crap out of it.

And use high temp grease.

will do thanks again, now to my new thread on how to fix the door handle. hmmmmf :(

They do sell a replacement pin set at the auto parts stores. It comes with the replacement caliper braket slide thingy and the mating bushing that goes in the bracket for the caliper. I got a little nervous about how much heat I had allready applied to try to get the pin out (bracket turned red and pin still didn't come out!) . I was afraid that I had softened the bracket with all of the heat applied and still didn't get the pin out so I bought one from a junk yard (I'm sorry mean used auto parts yard)!

Pretty soon a junk yard will be referred to as a previously owned auto parts store to justify the ever increasing cost of the junkyard prices (I have seen parts that actually go for more than a new part)! 25 years ago I paid $25 to $50 for a junkyard transmission! Now they get $500 or more from a used parts yard!

All so true.
