How many people would be interested in a GP of a 2.5" mandrel bent cat-back exhaust system?

Well guys, a friend of mine who specializes in custom parts for Mustangs and even some GM stuff contacted me the other day about perhaps getting a group purchase on a mandrel bent exhaust system for our cars. He and his girlfriend seem to have a newfound sickness for these cars after looking at mine a little closer. I told him I would put up a pole so we could see how many interested parties there would be. It sounds like if we can get 8-10 people in on this that would get the ball rolling. They would be test fitting it on my car, and it would come complete with mufflers. I'll be taking the day off of work to make sure everything looks clean and smooth and that I am happy wih the build quality. In my case, I'll be using stainless steel with Magnaflow's 2.5" dual in/out resonator in the middle of the car and another pair of either Magnaflows in the rear or Dynomax Ultraflows in the rear. If this sounds like somethign you guys might be interested in, please let me know.

Any questions, post them here.

Edelbrock makes a really nice 2in/2out muffler that you could use instead of the x-pipe. The magnaflow is very bulky, and if you use a smaller one, the effect is not the same. The edelbrock on the other hand is very thin. Are we talking cats back or maybe from kooks headers back ?

part no: Edelbrock dual in dual out 2.5" muffler part number 5512

I might have to look into that Edelbrock muffler too. I'm sure he will fabricate it using whatever mufflers you want, I just happen to like the way that the Magnaflow sounds. As far as being bulky though, I'm not so sure. Grifter (he doesn't post here much if at all anymore) used only the Magnaflow and a seperate x-pipe in the middle without anything else. He does have plans to add mufflers at the rear now, but it deffinately has a rumble that is unique to the Mark VIII's.

Oh, and these would be cat backs, but if one of the local guys gets his car back together soon, I might be able to get a header back system fabricated as well.

Sweet. I just had my exhaust done last year and already I am wanting to change mufflers. I'm a maybe on this poll simply because of timing.

I'm interested in some mandrel bent exhaust pieces, but i already have all the mufflers i need, and i have headers that they must fit.

So, I just spoke to they guy, and he asked me to update the pole to show tubing only so people could add their own mufflers too.

As far as matching up to headers, still not sure how that will work, but I should know more soon. Even if it did fit one car with headers, there is a slight chance that it may need to haev tubes bent to match up anyways.

And for some reason I can't edit that post. But ordering it without mufflers will be an option if this goes through. I'll have more info for you guys over the next few days.

I'm in, but will be putting in some headers sometime (no $$$$) so need to have that worked out.

Ok guy's I might need to be spoonfed here. I was planning on researching some basic mods for the Mark this spring, and one of those changes would be to make this a dual exaust since I have a 1998 base MarkVIII. Now if I order this system would it change any emission requirements? What kind of H/P gain will I get? What would the cost be? Would I be able to take this set-up anywhere to be installed for at least the same type of price that I could pay locally for the same set-up?

I know that mandrel bend are custom work.....right??? And I know 2.5" is an upgrade from stock. Can anyone answer some of my questions? I guess I just want to make sure if this would be an upgrade that I am expecting to be a performance gain w/o changing much stock or having emission problems.

Thanks,

Carlo

Well, depending on where you live, the one part that might be a problem is the 3rd cat/resonator (Seems like depending on who you talk to depends on what they call it) will no longer be there. As far as effecting the other emissions equipment, that would be a no, since it is past everything else in the car. Whatever you do in front of the "cat back" system is done at your own risk.

Yeah, I don't know anything about emissions laws in Ohio, so I really couldn't answer that question. Maybe there are some guys out there that have Dan's exhaust installed that could answer it better though?

I'll try and answer some of your questions...

A cat-back exhaust system will not influence emissions UNLESS the emission requirements specify OEM replacement of exhaust components only. But if they actually only measure the emissions, you will not be changing the results.

HP gain will vary depending upon exact configuration and mufflers, but keep in mind the LSC model advertised gains of 10 HP alone due to the 'factory version' of dual exhaust.

I do not know what the purchase cost would be but if fitted properly the install costs should not be any different than that from a local exhaust shop supplying the piping. Some shops do not cater to BYOP(Bring your Own Parts) customers, so you may want to ask beforehand. The exhaust shop I dealt with had no problems installing my exhaust system when I supplied all but the hangers and tips.

Mandrel bent pipe is simply a way of bending pipe while not reducing the inside diameter in the bends as with conventional pipe bends. The result is a more free flowing exhaust which is the whole point anyways. And yes, 2-1/2" is an upgrade from stock, which if the same as a Gen1, stock piping is 2-1/4" IIRC.

Yes Dorthy, you will be able to tell the difference between the stock 2-1/4 'Y' setup and a typical aftermarket 2-1/2 inch diameter dual setup, but it has been argued the difference between mandrel bent and other piping may be less than advertised. So many other factors come into play, that perhaps the difference would be only marginally felt.

I think I should be able to get you more info by the end of the week. Right now I'm just trying to get some interest to figure out how many kits they will sell. I already have 9 or 10 interested people, so I should be able to get pricing soon. I'll have a post for sign-up with pricing we get through the poling phase.

I know my total cost including mufflers, tips and installation was just shy of $600 - aluminized. You can easily get north of $1000 in stainless steel.

Dan, I'm sure you're sick of hearing it but would you have any headers in that kit? I'm all in GP or not if the answer is yes!!!!
