I'm getting really disgusted

Ok, heres the deal. Last night I was on my way home late and a GTI, VR6 comes next to me and he starts to get on it. Likewise I respond and proceed to pretty much stand still, I mean no competition. We started at like 60 and I shut down at 90 becaust it was no use.

Keep in mind one thing, I have California emissions on my car (wish I knew that when I bought it). Mods so far are 373 trac-loc rear, Reinhart chip, steeda crank pulley, Dynomax turbo mufflers w/resonator removed and air silencer removed w/K&N.

After I got off the exit, my car stunk of sulfur BIG time. Are my cats shot, O2 sensors? Is this the reason why I see no big improvement in power?

Sorry for the long post, just looking from some suggestions on mods and my exhaust.

Classic sign of the cats being clogged. When my car got clogged, she wouldn't pull after 4K RPM. I punched them, and she runs harder than when I bought her.

Laughing Gas!! The trouble with racing is that there is always someone who can beat you no matter how much money you spend on your car. Although with nitrous, not many will beat you.

Yes the cats are clogged.Possibly from your O2s gone bad. What happens is your O2s go bad and the computer doesnt know the true A/F ratio of the engine. It usuually goes rich. The extra fuel burns in the cats which makes them burn very hot and clogs them up.
Heres what you do.

You unbolt the exhaust at the cat on the driver side and before the cat on the passenger side. The passenger side is a bit rough to get to the top bolt, but with a long extension, a universal joint and some penetrant you should be fine. Then unbolt the rear after the resonator.
Unhook the passenger side O2 wire and pull the whole assembly out from under the car.

Now with either a long bent pry bar or a piece of 1 - 1 1/2 inch tubing beat all the crap out of the insides. It will take a little bit and you'll be amazed how much stuff actually falls out. Then do the drivers side ON the car.Its a little tougher cause your doing it on your back.Once your done start he car up and rev the heck out of it to blow out the remaining debris.(You'll never believe how good YOUR car sounds uncorked)

Now while your there replace both O2s.You already have the passenger side undone and the pipe on the ground so its easy.

The driver side all you need is a 7/8 crows foot and a long extension to get the O2 out.Its a little bit tough to plug the new one back in but not THAT bad.

Then you just bolt it all back together and enjoy how your car used to drive.

RE: I'm getting really disgusted

Hmmmmmmmmmm... gutting cats. I never did like cats. :p

What's the HP guesstimate? }(

RE: I'm getting really disgusted

Unfortunately, I have to keep the cats intact. NY emissions are crazy x(. Are there any aftermarket hi-flow cats that will accept an O2 sensor? I would like to go this route, but no matter what I'm definitely gutting the third cat. Hopefully that'll help a bit.

RE: I'm getting really disgusted

if i gut my 95, will it throw codes?, i thought i read on 93-95, it won't throw codes, i am getting sulfer smell after getting on it too!, i fig it was the cats,C/E light intermintintlly comes on some times then goes out, prob time for o2 sensors too....now i need a tranny and o2 sensors what next?i have o2 are a pain to do, well just need to know bout the cats.

RE: I'm getting really disgusted

I have a dumb (newbie) question please. How do I tell if I have California emissions on my car? According to carfax it was first titled in Florida so is there a chance it would?
Thanks

RE: I'm getting really disgusted

I would have to say that just because you get the sulfer smell from your car, does not mean that they are clogged. Friday night i was at the track, and ran a 15.2. I got the sulfer smell a little bit after every run. I will be pulling down my exhuast soon though to do some work. I suppose I won't know for sure if they are clogged unitl after I gut them. I did get the sulfer smell really bad on the way home though. Passing a semi, my buddy made a comment about it as I passed him.....

Something about "cloud of sulfer and streak of neon taillights"
