Today my set of ceramic coated ,3/4 length Kooks Headers have arrived. They are complete with place for O2 sensors and EGR hookup included...Much thanks to Bill Evanoff at Super Coupe Performance for his help and fast accurate service..I am looking foward now to making an appointment at Kooks to have them installed along with 2.5 exhaust . I have decided to start with dual free flow cats then Magnaflow "X" muffler in place of third cat then straight pipes to rear ...If its too loud I will add mufflers at rear..Stay tuned for further information ..

RE: Kooks Headers have arrived

Great. Let us know how it works out, preferably with soundclips. I have gears going in next week, and headers are next. I might decide to go with extra set of mufflers, but my mind is set on the 2in/2out magnaflow muffler in place of the x-pipes. Why don't you install the headers yourself ? You'll save a lot ...

RE: Kooks Headers have arrived

Try and post some pictures of the process.

I for one would like to see the headers on the 4.6L DOHC.

John - Great to hear that you are doing this mod to your car!!! I guess after you heard my car it wasn't loud enough for you? ;-)

This may be a dumb question, but do you need a chip to run headers on these cars?

I am seriously thinking about doing the same mod to my car after my inspection in Dec. We go 2-years in NJ between inspections, so I can get away with no cats for at least that long!

On the newer cars, if you're going to delete the cats, you'll need a chip or o2 sims to prevent a c/e light. Other than that, no, you don't need a chip to run headers. I'm not sure if you'd benefit if you had your car re-tuned after headers or anything like that.

RE: Kooks Headers have arrived

Jeremi I am not doing my own installation because I am so busy with work that I would lose more than it cost me to have someone else doit..And from what I hear Kooks is a class operation ...All the years I built race motors here on Long Island their name never came up , now that I am retired from that I find them ...How do you figure..

Brett I probably wont be able to take any pictures as I wont be there during install , and god knows you cant see them when they are in..I like the idea of getting the cats and O2 sensors in place I had EGR put in but I am not sure that was the right move , but its easier to remove than add..Pictures of headers here , but I don't think this is what you ment

Ken do you have a larger MAF ? if you do , you should get a chip , headers will make the car run lean .If no other modifications stock chip will be ok ..These headers are 3/4 length which leaves room for cats on the side of motor and the new muffler in the the place of the 3rd cat ..Acualy Ken I am looking for a car that is fairly quiet on highway but lets you know I am coming when I am on it ...I am getting a little too old for straight pipes !!

RE: Kooks Headers have arrived

John, thanx for the reply. Which magnaflow muffler are you going with 11386 or 14486 (both of these have the Tru-X design) ??? I am almost sure that you'll need extra end-mufflers to tone it down a bit more. No pictures is fine, as long as you get a sound clip. LOL.

Where are they on L.I ?
How much are the headers installed ?
Thank you

RE: Kooks Headers have arrived

Ok here is my newest update on my experience with Kooks Performance Headers .
There was a slight complication with the headers as the template for the 95 didn't include air injection which was on my car ,so fittings were not on headers ..Kooks modified the headers and fitted the air injection to them ,at no charge to me , and only a slight delay in delivery.
The exhaust system installed by them was first rate complete with separation flanges behind transmission , to drop only half the system ,either end , without dropping the whole thing..Nice touch..hangars were made , and first class..
I was surprised when I saw where the headers came down to , they end more than half way down the bell housing .They are longer than I anticipated ,the only length of header missing is the 90 deg bend and the length parallel with the street..They are longer than shorties , truly 3/4 length.
I had some discussion with them regarding long tubes . Their opinion is , that in todays cars requiring cats , they sell , I believe they said , 9 out of 10 , 3/4 length .Most people today want to try and keep their street rods as hassle proof as possible, and the difference in power gain is small..Long tubes make it extremely difficult to mount cats and balance tubes before the mufflers ,in most cars , whether the mufflers are in the middle or the rear , there just isn't very much room..
It is very difficult for me to appraise the performance ,as loud exhaust always makes the car feel faster ..I will say this , the car car feels much more responsive after 3k RPM . I will give more of an opinion when I get it quieted down a little. Many of you would love the sound , its sounds like a big block fueler , accelerating after 3K RPM , and just about as loud..I only have the Magnaflow "X" muffler and straight pipes out the rear..
Remember this car is totally virgin , a chip mod is very much needed , as shift points are very sloppy ,and at the wrong RPM.Also car runs much leaner now on the analyzer, actually tripped the O2s when it was cold and and I first picked up ..I have cleared codes and they have not come back , probably because the ECU has retaught itself to run richer . These mods are weeks away and I will report as I go along..

Gald to hear it!

Kooks facility is amazing too!

The flanged exhaust is the only way to do it. We have been doing the flanged setup from the get go. Makes working on it so much more easier.

The dyno tells the story on these.
The car we donated for the first set ever yeilded 30 rear wheel HP and 15 ft-lb of torque!!
If you didnt feel that then your fuel delivery isnt up to par or something.

You will also see a gain in fuel economy as well.

RE: Kooks Headers have arrived

Yes Geno I was happy with the whole process , except my decision to wait on the rear mufflers ,to see how loud it is , was a mistake..
That exhaust system in the picture , is as nice as my installation , fine workmanship is not always the norm today , its good to know that its still around..Does that Mark in the pic have headers and or cats ?

RE: Kooks Headers have arrived

Thats my car and its a cat back system, the one we have had for about 4 years now.
