Let's Give Back to our Servicepeople!

Well, it's that time of year. And as we saw, little things like our member Roadboss did for someone in the military really makes a difference.

So -- are people here interested in sponsoring a military person to pay their 2008 dues for club membership?

This could be done anonymously - you could let me know, and I could let you know who to sponsor (you could send the dues to the club directly with a note that it's for whomever you sponsor).

We'd also need to know who in the military would like to participate in this program.

So feel free to post up if you have ideas or are interested (there has already been interest expressed in the Members Forum).

Or, if you have any other ideas, please feel free to post them.

Sign me up too.

I (sort of) know one member of the military here, and I'll sponsor him. I know that Charlie (Roadboss)already gave him a gift, so I'll do the sponsoring.:)

His name is Chadly.

There's a lot more servicepeople here so, I say, just pick one and sponsor them.:)

Wow Bill I dont know what to say. It seems like thank you isnt quite enough, but thank you. I have never had such a warm welcome from any forum I have been a part of, which is quite a few. You guys truly are great people.

Glad to do it Chadly. Merry Christmas.

I turned 18 the same year that they stopped the draft for the Vietnam war. I had my service card and the number was low enough, that I would have gone to Vietnam if they didn't stop the draft.

I really appreciate your service for our country.

Well I can honestly say I am glad you didnt have to go. I know many people that did go, and didnt have anything good to say about it. At least you were man enough to not be a draft dodger.

I think Iraq is a totally different war. You might think its crazy, but at times I miss it and want to go back. There is nothing in the world like leading a group of Marines into combat.

Before I get too far off topic, THANK YOU!!!
And Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Yeah! Our first match! So servicemen and women, please let us know if you are here and who you are!

Well, we seem to have more volunteers to sponsor than sponsoree's! Please don't be shy about telling us that you serve our country!

i served for 5 years, and i miss it. Its not exactly the family life i was looking for though. I missed my family and friends too much to re-enlist. Iam glad to see some support though.... i can remember coming back from security (state side) during the war. I lost my job both times and had to drop my classes. It was hard to establish any kind of life since it was pulled away for so many reasons. Hurricanes, terrorists and anything else they thought of.

God Bless USA and all our soldiers

why not just let the LOD grant free membership to our military people?
They deserve it, dont they?
Chadly knows first hand where I stand on this...but asking someone to send the LOD money to show our appreciation just feels a bit....I dont know....just, well..how does giving money to the club show appreciation for our service men and women who put their lives on the line? and I dont just mean in battle...I mean their PERSONAL lives, every day as well.

dont get me wrong...they've earned a lifetime membership if you ask me. But sending the LOD money to show that, just doesnt really make a valid point to me.

sorry gang. I am a 100% supporter of our troops...but where the club dues come in to that is a bit odd to me.

lastly...very rarily will you find a member of our military forces asking for donations on their own behalf...they already sacrificed for us...the last thing they seem to do is ask for anything in return...so you probably wont get too many service men and women raising their hands in here to accept a donation.

Craig, I hear what you are saying, but I believe you missed the entire point of all this.

I think the intentions here by individual club members of LODto do this on their own was a very gracious gesture to show their humble appreciation to our troops. It is not intended to generate revenue for the club - "donations", but rather to bring some happiness to our service men and women any way we can.

This is not a official LOD sponsored activity, so you might want to direct your comments and suggestions to the LOD board of directors instead of the club members that just want to do something nice. It is something that came from our hearts, so please step off the soap box, and step up to the plate if you really want to help us club members share the love of our troops in our own appreciative way. :)

no soap box needed here Mikey...I was just wondering why it had to be a paid donation, to show our appreciating.

I can think of alot better ways to show that, than sending $20 to a website.

if it's giving thanks that the LOD wants, then as I suggested, they should just grant full membership to the servicemen/servicewomen anyway...if it isnt a fund raising suggestion.

I have no problem with individuals who want to show some "thanks"...but this thread was started by a LOD officer, not a generous individual member of the site, that's all.

Confronting me on a public message board and telling me I should "step up" is a cheap shot. You have no idea some of the things I have done to show may gratitude towards members of our military, and your comments make it look like I dont appreciate them.

You really shouldnt make this personal...I wasnt...I was making what I thought was an intelligent suggestion to the LOD as a group...not any individual.

I didnt miss the point Mike. But I think you might have misunderstood mine, that's all.

No harm, no foul. I just saw a "sticky" thread authored by a LOD officer suggesting that people send in $20 to the club if they want to show "thanks" to military people...

I just think there are other ways as well, without involving cash donations collected by the LOD, that's all.

Craig, I'm a moderator, not an officer, and I was trying to do something in addition to the things I do all year long. Actually, this discussion started in the Members Forum. It's in no way LOD sponsored.

So instead of raining on my parade, what's your suggestion? I mean, you said my suggestion sucked, so tell me, what should I do instead?

And yeah, now it's personal, because up until now I always thought I was a generous individual member of this site.
