Life expectancy of the fuel pump?

I bought a 93 drive shaft and since I have to drop the fuel tank to install it, would it be good preventive maintenance to replace the fuel pump at the same time?

RE: Life expectancy of the fuel pump?

Unless you're getting some kind of symptoms of a fuel pump failing (intermittent stalling etc), I would leave it be, it will probably last quite a bit longer. But if you can get a spare one real cheap or you don't mind spending $150 then sure why not.

I've got the original pumps on both my Marks. That doesn't mean that they won't fail tomorrow though. I plan on replacing the pump on the red car this summer, when I put my new gas tank in (the metal shield on the tank is rusted).

I need to update my signature mileage.

Red - 183k miles
Green - 156k miles

My '94 had 154k on the original pump when i sold it.

I replaced mine at a little over 100K due to the fuel system not holding pressure even though the pump still seemed to function.

RE: Life expectancy of the fuel pump?

OK, I guess I'll leave it alone for now.

I checked fordpartsnetwork out of curiosity and their price for a new pump is over $500. NAPA wants $202 just for the pump part (Carter). Advance is a little less for a Carter. Autozone's web catalog is so confusing, I quit trying to find one there.

The reason I was thinking about changing it out early was because I usually work out of the state and I'm now using the Mark as my work car. If it dies when I'm away from home, I may get stuck with a very expensive replacement bill, besides the inconvenience. I have been home since mid december and I probably have a few more days or weeks before leaving again so I have the time now to do a little preventive maintenance.

That's why the airplanes are so reliable these days. They replace parts before their life expectancy is reached.

Your best replacement is a Walbro.

190lph or 255lph
