Loud POP from the dash

This morning, when I turned on the defrost it made this very loud POP sound from inside the middle of the dash. And it made the sound once or twice more and then didn't do it again.

When I got to work, I dropped the glove box down to see if I could see it do something. Of course it worked fine.

After work, I tried it and it worked fine, so I turned it off. Well, it was a bit colder than I had figured driving home, so I turned it on, and it was more like a THUMP. THUMP. THUMP. Which repeated even after I turned the HVAC system off. Then I started with the defrost, and worked my way left pressing buttons. When I pressed the Max AC button it stopped, and I turned it off again.

After a quick search, I found this thread.

If it is the blend door, is the process on a 96 the pretty much the same as in the 97/98(since the three articles here are for 97/98s )?

Is there anything I can try to examine from the glove box area to see if it's the blend door?

TIA!

The Gen1s do not have the same design of the infamous blend door as the 97-98s. BUT they do have a blend door motor which certainly sounds like it could be stripped as mentioned in the referenced thread.

they are also a pain to change!! 93-94 are different than my 95' which looks different than the ones (97-98) in the "how to" section. I guess the 96's are probably the same as my 95'(hav'nt changed one to see).they mount the same just different depth than 93-94 if you remove the radio/info control button panel you can see the back of the blend door control unit.

Thanks guys!

I pull the radio and see what I can see.

I can pick the function, ie floor, def, vent all that stuff, but if I change the temp from hot to cold, then back up to hot, the air coming out of the vents doesn't go back to being hot.

Maybe today I'll try the Automatic button which I never use normally, and see what it does.

the info switch panel snaps in I found it was easier to press the release clips for the radio from there. also allows more light in to see the blend door control unit.

While other things have popped up, and I'll have to suffer with this for a bit... I did get the radio out, and I wasn't really able to see much of anything other than wire bundles. I think I'm really gonna have to study the articles in the tech section, to see what I need to see about seeing! However I did hear a whirring sound similar to gears turning then POP!
