hello all. I am about to change the moonroof on my 93 mark VIII. It is one of those jobs that i feel should be researched before jumping in. does anyone have any tips or advise before i start? any and all advise will be appreciated thanx in advance.

Do you have a manual?

Why are you replacing it?

Are you replacing the glass, motor or exactly what all are you replacing?

hello, i am replacing the glass. the rubber seal is in chunks on my original one. I found a cheap replacement for sale in town here and bought it. Ford would not just sell me the seal, they would only sell me the whole piece for 400 dollars, so i assume this is the best way to go. the glass shops i talked to only wanted oem rubber to replace the seal....and as stated above....Ford didn't help. and, is there something i can treat the seal on my replacement part with before i install? I actually have a manual on disc which has gone awol...it is fairly good...if i knew where it was.....
so in a nutshell, any tips on how to remove the glass? And is there anything i can use to prep the new seal (already on the new glass of course) to help it last longer? thanx in advance. Chris

Wow, you should've posted sooner. You can get the seal from http://www.sunroofdoctor.com/!

But anyways, the glass has to come out. It's not that difficult. From the manual...

Removal

1. Open glass panel approximately half-way.

2. Unsnap the halo from glass panel assembly.

3. Raise glass panel to the vent position.

4. Slide halo fully rearward.

5. Remove six glass panel retaining screws (three per side).

6. From outside of vehicle, remove glass panel.

Installation

1. Operate moon roof system to lower glass lifter arms approximately one-quarter of the way. This relieves tension on the cables, enabling lifter arms to move for easier glass positioning and for installation of the glass panel retaining screws.

2. Position sliding glass panel. Install six retaining screws. Finger-tighten center screws (for glass panel adjustment). Tighten remaining screws to 2-4 N-m (18-35 lb-in).

3. Lower glass panel from the vented position to slightly below the roof panel sheet metal surface (12mm (1/2 inch) maximum), then raise it to the closed position.

CAUTION:
To prevent halo damage, do not allow glass panel to travel rearward during this operation.

4. Check and adjust the glass panel as required (flush to - 1.0mm low at the front and flush to +1.0mm high at the rear).

5. Tighten all retaining screws to 2-4 N-m (18-35 lb-in).

6. Slide halo forward.

7. Open the moon roof approximately one-quarter of the way.

8. Install halo to glass panel.

I cannot stress the CAUTION enough. When I replaced my seal, before I got the glass adjusted right, it got away from me and the halo got broke.

I'll see if I can dig up some pics.

ok i havew heard it said there are no stupid questions....but here goes. what is the halo? is that the plastic part almost under the glass? Id rather look stupid then break stuff. thanx in advance. Chris

Yep, the halo is the black plastic trim on the inside.

Here's the pictoral anthology... LOL

I use industrial spray silicone for all the weatherstripping on my Mark VIII. Spray it onto a paper towel or sponge and wipe it on the seal.

thank you driller, so much. i will use this info, and the sunroof dr. info. these parts are small i can afford the space to store one extra.....and prep it for when i need it! you now have a fan in me!........Chris

well i too have a question.... one of the pins that i have circled in your picture here... is baddly worn.... the one that runs in that groove there...(the one to the right) and it causes the window to bounce badly... and as you can expect......RAttle RATTLE..
