More than a hit and run

The citizens of Detroit have obviously lost their minds. Not only are murders up something like 55% - the manner of death and mayhem is getting beyond belief.

Here's an example...

DETROIT -- A well-respected judge became the victim of a deadly hit-and-run accident while walking in Detroit Monday night.

Thirty-sixth District Court Judge John R. Perry, 73, was crossing East Lafayette with a friend around 9 p.m. when a car speeding eastbound hit him. Witnesses told police that Perry landed on the hood of the car.

"A dark-colored vehicle was traveling eastbound on Lafayette and struck a pedestrian," Detroit Police Officer Mitchell Quinn said. "The vehicle dragged the pedestrian approximately 100 feet at which time it was observed swerving and weaving in the roadway, apparently in an attempt to knock the pedestrian off the windshield and then take off at a high rate of speed."

Papers that Perry was carrying were left scattered in the street, according to Local 4.

Perry was pronounced dead at Detroit Receiving Hospital, the station reported. Police are looking for the driver of a dark-colored, four-door sedan. The vehicle will likely have major windshield damage and deployed airbags, according to police.

DETROIT -- Police are searching for a pickpocket who apparently rummaged through a wallet belonging to the victim of a fatal crash on Detroit's east side early Tuesday.

A Chevrolet Cavalier ran a stop sign at Goddard and Victoria streets, was hit broadside by a minivan and pushed into a wall, according to police. The driver of the minivan then crashed into a house, Local 4 reported.

Both men inside the Cavalier died in the crash. One of them was ejected from the vehicle onto the front lawn outside a home.

Police say the man's wallet appeared to be rummaged through when they searched it for identification. There was no money inside of it, according to Local 4 reports.

The names of the victims were not released pending notification of the families.

The minivan driver was taken to a local hospital and was listed in serious condition.

Police continue their search for the pickpocket

Victims Found Bound, Gagged, Beaten In Detroit Home

A man charged with killing his girlfriend, their daughter and three other children was ordered Tuesday to undergo a psychiatric examination to determine whether he is competent to stand trial.

A judge at Thompson's arraignment on April 2 also had trouble communicating with the suspect, according to Local 4 reports. Thompson, when asked by the judge if he understood the murder charges against him, swayed his body side-to-side and would not answer. After repeating the question several times and failing to get an answer, the judge decided to postpone the arraignment until the next day. But after a short delay, Thompson returned to the courtroom and the arraignment was completed.

Thompson, 36, allegedly beat to death his girlfriend, Lisa Shelton, 33, their 9-year-old daughter, Aushanai Thompson, and Shelton's three other children -- William Parker Jr., 16, Wrandell Parker, 13, and Wanee Parker, 12.

The victims were found bound, gagged and beaten around 10:30 a.m. April 1 in their home at 158 East Minnesota St. on Detroit's northeast side.

Shelton's 13-year-old sister -- who was also bound and beaten -- reportedly played dead, escaped the home, called for help and led police to the suspect, according to Local 4 reports.

Police say they recovered a lead pipe from the home that they believe Thompson used in the beatings, Local 4 reported.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office determined that all four children died of blunt force trauma to the head and Shelton died of strangulation.

Thompson was charged with five counts of first-degree murder, which carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole. He also was charged with an alternative count of felony murder in Aushanai's death, with first-degree child abuse as the underlying felony.

Complete madness - all in today's paper. It's been like this for weeks here.

What do you think is the problem? Unemployment?

RE: More than a hit and run

I don't think i can elaborate on what i think the problem is without tripping the profanity filter. It would start with "dumb-" then degenerate into a string of profanity.

Murder in detroit was low last year, it's gone way up so far this year. El nino or something?

RE: More than a hit and run

No profanity here.
So simple.

Institute the death penality. Use the death penality. No leathal injections, either. They die the same way they killed. Shoot 'em / Stab 'em / whack 'em over the head with a lead pipe. Same Way.
Show no mercy, show no leincy (sp). Protect honest society, rid the earth of the killers.

RE: More than a hit and run

Nasty drinking water, radon gas, cabin fever, while living under a high voltage power line will do it.

I visit my family living in metro Detroit at least twice a year, and just shake my head when I travel around town (both east, and west side) - crazy. Just glad I was able to move, for the second time, out of the state.

RE: More than a hit and run

It's tough to say...but I think Americans just like to kill people. With cars, guns, knives, whatever. You guys aren't too choosy. Maybe it's a very low regard for human life in general. Or bad manners?? Seriously....the stats for 2001 show 20,308 homicides in the US. Compared to Canada, we had a whopping 582 homicides!!!! I mean..you guys have reason to happier than us. A richer economy. We have slightly higher unemployment (5.8% vs 7%). We are however slighlty more educted than the US population, so perhaps we've learned through school that killing is "bad". The city closest to where I reside, Windsor, is less than 1 mile from Detroit. In Detroit, there were 380 or so homicides. In Windsor, there were 7. I mean we are seperated by less than 1 mile. Oh..and we Canadians love our guns as much as you do. Our gun ownership is about the same per capita as in the US. So why do you guys like to kill so much??

RE: More than a hit and run

Ron, the US has about 20 times that population as Canada. So that goes about halfway to explaining why we have 40 times as many murders.

I don't think the rest can be attributed to unemployment or education. I think population density might have something to do with it. Most of our murders happen in big cities, places like detroit where a lot of people live close to each other (in not-so-good conditions, usually). How does Canada stack up in terms of big cities with bad neighborhoods?

Your one example was Windsor. I'm not familiar with the entire city, but the parts i've seen, i wouldn't be uncomfortable walking there at night. I can't say the same for most of Detroit... as a matter of fact there are a lot of areas where i wouldn't stop at the stop signs for fear of getting carjacked.

RE: More than a hit and run

85% of it is caused by drug addiction.

Receipe:
Take poor, uneducated, or unskilled people, get them hooked on drugs costing them $300 a day ($2,100 a week) and you have the formula for murder, robbing, rape, etc, etc. The poor inner city people begin taking drugs as it's the culture they live and are born into. They have the same needs as all of us, but no where-with-all to achieve them, so they sink lower & lower and take drugs to forget their plight, to lose themselves. Then, they have to steal & murder to support their habit. Drugs are the evil. Crack Coccaine especially, also herion, and too many people in too small a space i.e. overpopulation

RE: More than a hit and run

I would just like to add something, since Ron mentioned that Windsor is a mile from Detroit and doesn't have the same problems with murder. One of my friends lives in Harper Woods, which is adjacent to Detroit. He lives about a mile from Detroit. There isn't a murder problem there. The same goes for Grosse Pointe. Adjacent to Detroit, but no murder problem. It's not just Canada that's safe :). And you Canadians have a bridge and a border crossing keeping the Detroiters out of your town.

RE: More than a hit and run

We just had a hit and run where an elementary school teacher stayed late at school then was hurrying home. She hit four kids a few blocks from the school and kept going. That was wednesday evening. She was at school on thursday and took friday off. Her lawyer brought her forward on monday. Two of the kids are dead. Another car following her hit two of the kids and took off also. They haven't found that one yet.

RE: More than a hit and run

Dave,

Your population is 9 Times that of Canada. Yet your murder rate is nearly 35 times ours...Just food for thought...
