My latest vintage find

Well in helping a friend of ours clean out her basement after her father died I was given this. A Scott-Atwater 3.6hp outboard motor. After some time on the message board at AMOCI.org I came to fine it is a 1955 model. I have already begun the restoration process.. The Recoil was not working and with a little lubricant I now have the pawls engaging the flywheel as they should. Next is a spark test and maybe a carb cleaning. I am going to have some fun with this!

Nice! That's as old as I am.:D

Some of those Scotts had built in bilge pumps, does that one?

I've got a pre war Champion 3 horse in the garage, waiting to be restored.:)

what a neat find! and built in good 'ol Minneapolis. It brings to mind a motor of a similar size that has under the workbench in my dad's garage for as long as I can remember. I may have to go check that out!

The bilge pump feature was called Bail-A-Matic and was never on the 3.6hp. It is an neat thing to see though. It has a hose with a puck type thing that you connect to the water pump on the motor. Then you place the puck in the bottom of the boat, and there you go. That old champion sounds cool. In fact it may have been made by Scott-Atwater. Here is a link to the only real site with info about Scott-Atwater on the net.

Before you put new gas in it, replace every piece of rubber tuing as the new gas with the corn in it will eat up that old rubber and screw it all up!!!

Well I have removed the upper and lower housings and checked for spark. No spark present so need to work on points etc... And yes all rubber will be replaced as the fuel line has already bit the dust due to age. I think I am also going to add an inline fuel filter as well. It is a blast having something like this to tinker with. Here are 2 photos and the video of where it stands now.

Well after some work today I decided to use a cleaner wax and a final nice wax on the tank and lower housing. I think that I am going to leave much of the motor as is and not try to repaint anything at all. I love the patina that everything has. Here are some before and afters. You may not be able to tell a whole lot of difference as the photos just do not do the shine justice. Here are the befores:

Nice.

You might want to check the coil for the no spark issue. That's a common problem with old outboards.

I also have an old 2 cylinder Firestone in my basement, I think it's a 15 horse, it doesn't have a cover though, it's partially dissassembled, and needs new coils.:)

Edit: I just looked at the plate, it says Scott Atwater. :)
