I have an AutoTap OBD II diagnostics scanner that my brother uses for his 94 V6 Mustang and it works just fine for his car. When I tried to use it in my 97 Mark VIII, it won't even find the scanner and will not work at all. Does anyone else use one of these scanners or know of anyone with one and if so has anyone else had any problems with tryin to hook it up to the mark viii? It uses the Ford specific module.
any help would be great. thanks,

Justin

I didn't think OBDII was introduced until '96?

RE: Need Help With AutoTap OBD II Scanner

That is correct. But some scanners can read both OBDI and OBD II. But in this case i would double check if it says that it can read 96 and up ford vehicles.

RE: Need Help With AutoTap OBD II Scanner

The 94 v6 mustang is OBD II, the 5.0L V8 were OBD I. The scanner is an OBD II scanner for all ford cars according to the ford catridge i have for it. It will connect and read his car fine.. but when i plug it into mine it wont even find the scanner.

I had the same problem with my 96. It kept saying couldn't link or something similar. I started the car and it was able to read computer then.

I just went the easy way and bought a NGS with the proper software - to go along with the Star II I already own. Now I can see everything in my '88 Mustang (converted to mass air), '94 & 98 Mark VIIIs.
It's simple!

RE: Need Help With AutoTap OBD II Scanner

I have never had a problem hooking an autotap up to my '98. Has your brother tried it at all? THe way it sounds to me is either the plug isn't getting all the connections, or your ignition isn't turned on. IIRC, the AutoTap uses power from the signal it gets from the OBDII port to run, and just sends signals back and forth through the cable. Is the light on the reader on when it's plugged in?

Yes, Frank, I think you're on it.

Justin, Check fuse #38 (10A) in the dash box. This is a dedicated fuse for pin #16 in the DCL connector. This provides an initial voltage pulse to any scan tool to let the tool know it's been plugged in, and depending upon the type of scanner, may be used as its power source.

RE: Need Help With AutoTap OBD II Scanner

Also check that the brake lights work. That will check the fuse in the engine compartment fuse box to make sure it is good. That is fuse number 25 a 50 amp fuse. Remember to also make sure the grounds on pin 4 and 5 of the DLC are good too. Pin 4 goes through C201 which is the largest connector going through the firewall on the driver's side to ground #103 located in the engine compartment near the fuse box. Pin 5 is grounded through a splice to #G300 which is located behind the driver's kickpanel near the bottom. The autotap would use pin 16 which is connected to a 10 amp fuse marked #38 as said before. Wire color is Light Green with a Red stripe. It could use either ground pin(s) 4 (Black Wire) or 5, (Black Wire with a Light Blue Stripe). It could also use all four wires. Pin 16 is power, pin 4 is power ground, pin 13 is the PCM connection and pin 5 is called (in the EVTM) the PCM ground. So, make sure you have B+ (battery voltage) between pins 16 and 4 and 16 and 5. Don't place a VOM between pin 13 and 5, you may damage the PCM.
As you are facing the connector, pin 1 is on the top left. Pin 9 is on the bottom left. Just count across. There should be no connections in pins 1,3,6,8,9,11,12,14,and 15. They all should be completly empty.
