It's official that the HID bulbs won't be available anymore.

This is the only LEGAL option to replace the burn out bulbs on a 2nd gen car.

There is nothing to service 1st gen HID assemblies, of course short of buying the flaky halogen versions.

The retail price is set to be around $750. I will do my best to make these available at better pricing, but it's not going to be cheap. I hope for $650, maybe less. Keep in mind we'll be getting two brand new headlights for the price, and worry free performance, be it with legal halogen 9006 bulbs, or aftermarket rebased 9006 D2S style bulbs. Thanx Ford !

Happy I got an HID replacment bulb sitting in a box from back in the day when they were $75.

This is pretty good news :D. You can just retrofit the housings with aftermarket HIDs it won't be legal but it will be bright. Or use the aftermarket kits that replace the current HID setup.

I am very surprised that Ford went through all this trouble to "fix" the HIDs.

got any pics with them lit up with those 9006's in them? im curios to see the light output, man it cant be anything like an hid, i dont think i could live with them after having hid's , i'd also pay good money for a used hid over the price of them, they look good though!!!

The output is very good imo. It's better than most 10 years old HID headlights out there. Remember the reflector is brand new, so is the lense, and the bulb. I will get some photos of the output but they never show how good or how bad it really is. Mark VIII HID lights, be it 1st gen or 2nd gen are pretty weak in comparison to bosch or hella HID projectors.

Paying $150-$200 for a used HID bulb is retarded, but people still do it everyday.

The reflector part has less webbing on the top and bottom. The back mounting surface and bulb hole is an entirely different mold.

HIR bulbs are inferior to "plug in" HIDs. About 2500 lumens for a high beam bulb vs 3100lumens in an HID...

Yes, but if I understand the post, this retrofit is designed to use a halogen bulb. that being the case I would simply would be interested in the results of the use of the HIR bulb. HIR's are brighter than hologens. Do you know if the HIR's create more heat?

The HIRs burn cooler than standard halogens.

HIR bulbs have a spherical portion of the envelope designed in concert with an internal reflective coating to reflect heat from the filament that is normally wasted back on the filament to make it burn brighter. This reuse of normally wasted heat allows the bulb to produce more light without drawing more current.

I'm sure you'll be fine, unless you tell people they aren't the original OEM bulbs, I don't see how anyone would be able to tell just by looking at the outside of the housing.

Does it really seem like it would be easier to redesign the housing to accommodate non HIDs as it would have been to just offer the housing with DR2 or similar bulbs?

:D -J

It may not have been easier but it is cheaper for Ford.

Halogen bulbs are much cheaper than new ballasts and HID bulbs.

OK, Is there a problem using these? I am not wanting to cause any damage to any part of the car.
I'm using those exact ones, purchased from the same seller. Been on the car for over a month and they work flawlessly. Much brighter than the stockers and pretty easy to install. Took me almost 2 hours only cause it was the first time I did it. I could probably cut that time in half the second time around. :D
