On the quest for the perfect exhaust !

It's been my dream to have a well performing quiet exhuast just wouldn't break the bank. Well, it's difficult to have all these qualities in just one place, but I think I accomplished that.

Finally !

Entirely custom, tig welded, mandrel bent exhaust 2.5" from 04 cobra manifolds to a 2-1 Magnaflow muffler, 3" thru the gas tank area to a Y into dual 2.5" pipes to Polished SS Magnaflow 18" mufflers.

Cobra manifolds required the steering shaft to be moved over 1/4" - simple 7" extension did the trick.

2.5" downpipes with wideband already in place. You can pull the trans without touching the exhaust.

Huge Magnaflow center muffler plays an equalizer role along with ..

... mandrel bent 3" piping to the Y before the differntial.

Exhaust splits into dual 2.5" pipes and looks like true dual from the back.

More big mufflers with sleeper stock tips.

Apparently this tip was too close to the bumper and burned the paint during those WOTs.

Little bling never hurt anyone !

I should've done this long time ago, as the power output is beyond what I can handle now. Partial throttle acceleration is enough, no need for WOT anymore.

The car is dead quiet on the freeway, that is until you open the throttle plates. The sound is very solid and exotic, zero raspiness, zero drone.
Both my tuner, and the exhaust fabricator feel that this setup is good until 500rwhp, maybe more.

Big thank you to Diamond @ Diamond Fabrication for the grea idea, even better workmanship, and overall a great experience.
But next time I need to leave my car for 3 days, I'm gonna have to buy another mark 8 first LOL !

I'll work on the soundclips when Bart gets off his azz and brings the camcorder over.
Also, a dynosession is on order to take full advantage of all the recent mods.

Very nice! :)

I hope to redo the exhaust on my '93 before spring as well. Don't think I need the mondo 3" though. ;)

RE: On the quest for the perfect exhaust !

If that's the Diamond i'm thinking of, i went to school with him. Did he used to work at PF&E?

I would have kept the headers, myself, but to each his own. I thought I had achieved basically what you were shooting for here with my previous system. Long tubes + dual in / dual out muffler + two more mufflers at the back, and it was nice and quiet on the highway / around town and still sounded sweet when i opened it up.

The y-pipe setup you have probably goes a long way to kill any drone. I like it. But i think i'd have kept the headers.

Yep, that's him. He got tired of doing all the work at PFE and opened up his own business couple years back.

I hated the header noise. They might have been worth 10-15 HP but I have enough to spare that. 03 Cobra guys pick up 5-10HP with long tubes vs. stock manifolds. Not worth it IMO. You should see these logs - they go a long way vs stock lincoln manifolds.

RE: On the quest for the perfect exhaust !

Looks good J. I know you hated the Kooks sound. I can say that I am not totally married to the sound I have now. but I am going to live with it for now. Nice write up and pics.:)

RE: On the quest for the perfect exhaust !

i love the system you put on there. the cobra manifolds do flow well my only complant is the hitting on the shaft. my car makes a horrible knocking noise because of the shaft being on the header. i hope to fix all of this soon.

RE: On the quest for the perfect exhaust !

Just use that simple extension trick. Everything cleared just fine.
You can reuse the stock rag joint, just shorten the intermediate shaft a bit, and it all falls into place.

Too bad I sold the car. But the project was done and it wasn't fun anymore.

New beast is in the making already.

RE: On the quest for the perfect exhaust !

How much did you get out of it?

I want to get into another fast car, but my next one will have to have a manual trans.

RE: On the quest for the perfect exhaust !

I got enough.

I can build you a quick CE ... LOL. It's halfway done !
