Well, we didn't witness any wrecks, but;
I'm keeping pace with the faster traffic on I-81 (got the cruise control set at 80MPH) keeping a sharp eye for troopers on the roadside ahead, suddenly I look in the rear view mirror - there's a NY State Trooper RIGHT ON MY BUMPER. Where the hell did he come from? Fortunately, he has a guest in the back seat and he seems to be in a big hurry to take him somewhere - WHEW!
Next bit of excitement - I pull up to the toll booth exit at Buffalo, and a big cloud of smoke is billowing out from under the car. I quickly pay the toll, cut across 5 lanes to the shoulder, and find that the transmission dipstick was not fully seated in the tube, and Mercon V had blown out and was dripping onto the hot exhaust. Push the dipstick back in, breathe another sigh of relief, and motor on.
Finally, after driving through NY and PA and seeing warning signs for deer crossings, yet not once seeing a live deer (plenty of roadkill though), coming off the highway, I ALMOST nail a deer, not a mile from my house in a built up suburban area. For some reason, I had slowed more than usual to take that off-ramp, so I was able to avoid Bambi. ANOTHER sigh of relief!
It sure felt good to get out of the car and relax once we finally got home.
