i had something happen today that i am always cautious about, for anyone who has ever taken a 4.6 apart when you remove the timing chains, you will always see the cam shafts spin about 1/4 turn because usually the valve train in caught in between a compression stroke or the lobes are on their point of revolution and the slightest touch will make them spin, today, i tore apart two motors in my shop back to back, the first one went super fast, the second one, the head bolts really didnt want to come out, but once they did, the heads didnt want to come off. well when i tear them down i wear latex gloves, i cant stand black oily sludge all over my hands, so as i went to remove the timing chains, nothing moved, so i figured it was just a lucky deal where everything was already where it was going to remain, little did i know that the cam shafts on the drivers head were waiting to eat my hand. as i took the last head bolt out i grabbed the head like i always do, one hand on the back, and my left hand on the cam gear and started to wiggle the head off, it took about 10 good tugs and it popped off and right as it did the cams turned sucking my middle finger of my left hand under the cam gear and pinning it into the head casting grinding the hell out of my finger, at this point i had the head off and needed to put it down and had to walk about 15 feet to put it with the heads from the previous engine, as i sat it down i could do nothing but yank my finger out, it took all of about 10 seconds to watch the middle finger fill with blood inside the glove, well after swearing for a few and shaking off the ain i continued tearing down the motor ignorng my finger, but the blood looked bad after a half hour or so , so i removed the glove not sure what i would see. this little gear got me good lol, it left a hunk about 1/16 of an inch deep and maybe 1/4 inch wide, the width of the gear on my knuckle closest to my finger nail. i ran it under water and oh my did that hurt. so after i washed it out i wrapped it in a bandaid so it would help hold the hunk of skin back where it came from, and its now 11:30 pm and you almost cant even see where this happend, although i have no problem feeling where it happend lol. its still very sore, partly because it partially crushed my finger. those cam shafts are no joke when they want to turn, they will turn , takes more than a finger to stop it. man did it hurt lol so always pay attention to what you are doing, i was on a roll and was thinking nothing could stop me, it almost did stop me. i tore 2 complete engines with trannies still on them down to bare blocks in just under 4 1/2 hours. made good time!!!

Ugh its always sorta surreal for me watching blood fill a glove. I whacked a little chunk out of my thumb with a chuck on a lathe. I was polishing and not being safe about how I was doing it...it caught and it very bluntly just whacked the tip of my thumb. Knocked the skin right off. I was wearing glover then also.

there wasnt much to see because the skin didnt get ripped off, it bonded back to my finger, its almost healed now just a small scab!
