Random Auto Show Thoughts...

Just got back from the 2004 NAIAS..here are some of my thoughts..

1) Of the nearly hundreds of cars we sat in (seemed like that many!) only 2 of them REALLY felt as comfortable as the Mark. That is to say that I felt "at home" in them, and they were comfy and the controls, ergos, etc fell readily at hand (your results may vary!)...The Maxima and the Lexus GS. Most of the other cars, while nice have HARD leather seats..even after they have been sat in. To be honest, I was shocked at the Maximan. It is REALLY nice. Nicer than I remember. If it was RWD, I'd be buying one tomorrow..I liked it that much. Nothing at the show we sat in is as quiet as the Lexus. To put it into perspective, Trish, with her cochlear implant has bionic hearing. She hears everything, and everything is amplified. When we closed all the doors on the Lexus, she said "Holy (insert filthy profanity here) this is the quietest car here!!" I agreed.

2) Those Maybachs are BIG!!! And quite nice. Interior is unreal.

3)The Honda Element has TONS of room in it for its smallish looking size. Unreal rear legroom. Seat fold every which way. Cool.

4) Was NOT impressed with one of my favs, the new Subaru Legacy. Was nice. Nice 250HP. But didn't do it for me. Was expecting more.

5) The Subie concept roadster is VERY nice though. Looks "italian". Heard the guy who penned it ws stolen from Fiat. Hopefully it will be more reliable than Fiat.

6)GM is completely stupid. The steering wheel in the new Corvette is nearly identical to the Malibu. WHAT ARE THEY THINKIN!!! DOn't believe me? GO look for yourself!

7) Lincoln is still adrift. Showed a Mark X 2 seater. Fancy T-Bird.

8)Was VERY interesting to see the marketing of the Scion badges. Had a YOUNG kid (20's) sloppily dressed, ball cap askew doing the speeches and introductions of their models. And he was really pushing the Internet buying. Was refreshing to see them using young people to push their models..their target demographic. BIG3 could learn something here...

9)New Volvo S40 was nice..but small. With 215HP, that little car will scoot.

10) The busiest booth, by far, was Ford. Absolutely swamped with people...but mostly in the car section. The 500 looks quite nice, except for the awful, awful grilled. That car would be a winner in my book if it had a V8. 6 speed Automatic tranny will be awesome I think. But it needs a new grille, V8...oh...and it comes with AWD in the higher end model. Neat.

11) VERY VERY VERY disappointed with the new Dodge Magnum. The concept last year was awesome. This car is ho-hum. Interior is nice, but still..well..just OK. Oddly, they had supplemental lighting INSIDE the car with a 2-3 foot long fluorescent tube light plugged in. I'm assuming this means the car is VERY dark on the inside. The windows are mere slits compared to other cars. The 300C, suprisingly looks pretty good. The grille will have to grow on me though. Cars won't be as fast as I think. On Dodge's own website, it said "0-60 in about 7 seconds". Hopefully they are sandbagging.

If you want my thoughts on any other cars, let me know. We saw so many......

RE: Random Auto Show Thoughts...

Volvo S-80 Premier & VW Premier W12 & my Audi S4 Quattro Cabriolet.

RE: Random Auto Show Thoughts...

Sandy,

Could not get to S4 cab..it was behind ropes :( VW was nice..but still scratching my head over the price. Didn't spend tons of time in Volvos..but if I recall, the most $$$ Volvo we were in had EVRY conceivable option ever know to man..or so it seemed....Am not totally wowed by the exteriror styling, however..

RE: Random Auto Show Thoughts...

I really like that S-80 Elite Premier. Twin TVs Refridg & Cut Stemware in the back. Is that the one you saw? Great motor as well. $55,000. Truly an impressive ride with it's Four-C Dynamic Chassis and opulence.

RE: Random Auto Show Thoughts...

What a great article. Although many of us have been to an International Car show of some kind, most of us havent been in quite some time. I for one havent been to one since 96.

RRocket, that was a great article, and I enjoyed reading "a consumer's opinion" instead of "reporter's". Nice job, and thanks.

I was especially turned on by the Magnum concept when I saw it early last year on the tv. I was just starting to think "new car" to replace my Merc, and I, as many of you know, am heavily into "Mopar Muscle". The "plug" they gave it on TV showed a supercharged Hemi, and a "Nomad" style look.

I have not heard anything about it since, so reading your input answered alot of my "I wonder what..." questions.

Great job...and Thanks.

You didn't actually get to sit in the Maybach, did you?

One of my friends brothers is a valet and he already got to drive one. He's not really a car guy, though.

That Magnum was nice, but it just felt kind of cheap on the inside. Same with the 300C. My dad really liked the Lexus', i didn't really check them out. They're nice but i just don't like them, because they're foriegn and they don't really seem to have any soul for some reason. I spent that time ogling the Ferraris.

RE: Random Auto Show Thoughts...

one of my thoughts...

The G35 coupe is still one of my favorites, did anyone else sit in the drivers seat. I think its much more comfortable than my mark.

Shelby cobra concept... very bad. I mean it had a good engine and such but the styling was very poor. Didnt do justice to the cobra. I would still take an original.

new mustang and Ford GT, EXCELLENT. The new mustang GT, 300hp for about $25,000, its one of the best horsepower deals since the death of the F-body. Some criticize the styling but it is unmistakenly a mustang so i say more power to them.

BlackIce,

Anytime you want an honest consumer review of ANY car, let me know. Trish and I have been driving the new cars as they have been coming out, for the last year or so.(and many used ones too). Yes...I was ALL about the Magnum..I even made the promise tha if it was everything the concept car was, I'd be buying one (I'm fond of wagons). Sadly, no supercharger, different headlights, less agressive styling, less bold wheel lips. Kinda sad. I had high hopes for it. You really feel as though you are inside that car. Almost tank-like. The doors are very high up...the window sills are near your ears it seems..you are in a cocoon of sorts. I'm sure it will make a fine highway cruiser...but I was disappointed after getting so worked up for that car. I REALLY wanted to love it..but it fell short. Maybe I was expecting too much, but Chrysler has been talking a big game, so I guess I fell hook line and sinker...

Dave,

Sadly, I didn't get to sit inside the Maybach. And you have no business oggling Ferraris..they are Foreign afterall (said so yourself!)

Dano,

Yeah..the G35 is quite nice..but the driver's area isn't as wide as the Mark...not quite as roomy for the driver. To my suprise, the Maxima is very wide and roomy up front. I'm really impressed by it. Most road tests say the torque steer is excessive, but I can't imagine it's anymore so that any other high performance FWD car...Oh...we drove the G35"X" model 2 weeks ago. AWD version. Felt every bit as quick as the RWD model..only availble with an automatic though...

i like the smaller driver area, i am not a big guy so it fits me well. The seat fits me perfectly. its bigger than the driver area in our fsae car... lol.

RE: Random Auto Show Thoughts...

Sandy,

This car is expensive here!! Checked one out. BASE price is $32,000. Although it comes fairly loaded...but only 205HP :( TO get leather, you have to go to the next model, which now costs $36,000! That's getting up there. For almost the same money I can get the Nissan Maxima with leather, 265HP, Xenon lights, Dynamic Stability Control, Bose stereo, etc... It's nice..but not as nice as the Maxima!!

Danoz,

The G35 is not as quiet on the road as my Mark either. I really do like that car though. Wish it was a bit bigger though...I'm not a big guy either, but if I can have more room, all the better..

RE: Random Auto Show Thoughts...

Diamante LS (Top Model) with the sole option of Cold Weather Pkg {Trac Control/Heated Seates & Fog Lights) here is $29,000 and there currently is a $3,000 factory-to-consumer rebate, making the top of the line $26,000.00 minus a discount off list of $1,000, so it's really $25,000. Great Deal considering zero percent interest for 12 months, then 1.9% for 2 years.

RE: Random Auto Show Thoughts...

The imports rarely, if ever, have 0% financing here. Very, very rare indeed. The LS version here with said options is over $37K. Not enough bang for the buck. Needs more HP compared to competition....or less price...
