random squeek possible tension pulley?????

I have had a random squeek/whistle coming from the pulleys. The Serpentine Belt is is good shape, and I am sure its one of the pulleys. I brought the Mark in to the dealership to have the Oil Pan replaced under my extended warranty, and I wanted them to replace the pulley as well under my same deductible. I have a very good relationship with my Service Rep. so I have had the Mark there for the past few days, but they can't get get the problem to happen. I am going to wait one more day before I pick it up since it will be raining tomorrow, and it seems to happen when it is damp outside.

Any suggestions???

Is there a common pulley that wears down on the Mark???

My Mark is a 1998 w/48,000 miles

RE: random squeek possible tension pulley?????

Most likely the idler pulley or tensioner pulley. You can use a piece of heater hose as a stethoscope to easily zero in on the culprit. My random squeaky belt was the tensioner pulley. Both are the same BTW(at least on the Gen1).

Thanks John....Do you have any Idea how much they cost, or the part# ?

I wonder if the dealer does not find the problem if I should just replace it myself when I find out. My deductible is $100.oo for the warranty, so if the pulley is less than that, I might just fo it myself.

The idler pulley and tensioner pulley or the same on 2nd gen too. I can't rememeber the cost, but is was much less then $100. Call one of the suporting dealer vendors for a discount.

You may also want to go to the Goodyear Gator back belt as well, I don't have the part number handy but it is on the site.

Dayco Idler Pulley P/N 89007 - 76mm flat steel pulley without flange
Dayco PolyCog Serpentine Belt P/N 5060980 - 27/32" x 98" 6 Rib

The pulley is about $15 and the belt is about $30(little more than regular belt).

The tensioner pulley and idler puller are interchangeable. If you need a tensioner assembly -
Dayco Belt Tensioner P/N 89218, comes with pulley for about $55.

Replacing any or all of the above is an easy DIY project. Just check and double check the belt is sitting properly on all pulleys prior to starting the vehicle. While the belt is off is a good time to inspect the accessory drive pulleys as well.
