REAL drag racing results...............

If you saw my earlier post, my girlfriend got me a day a drag racing school for my birthday. Here is what happened.....
I got to drive a rail dragster with 600HP down the old quarter mile.

Here is my ticket from my fastest run….
60’ – 1.42
330 – 3.883
1/8 – 5.953
MPH – 118.07
990 – 7.709
1/4 - 9.338
MPH – 138.3

Are you getting that, 9.3 @ 138 MPH!!

I made 5 runs for the day. Two 1/8 mile runs, just to get used to the car, and 3 full 1/4 mile runs.

The dragster was a 2 speed automatic with a big block engine that ran on alcohol. I did this all in Geno’s backyard at ATCO Raceway in South New Jersey.

Just for fun, I took my Mark VIII down the track when I was done with all my dragster runs, but still while the instructor was there. I did a 14.8 @ 97 and felt like I was walking!!!

Geno – there were 6 people in the class and the other 5 were there to get their 1/4 mile certifications. I guess since I was doing my runs with an instructor there, I was allowed to make full 1/4 mile runs without certification?

If anybody is thinking about doing this, I would recommend it. I’m still smiling today from how much fun I had yesterday.

Me and the dragster I drove (and my phat Mark VIII in the background)......

Did you use the chute? Looks like alot of fun. How much coinage? Just curious.

There was a parachute on the car, but I didn't need to use it. They didn't even show us how to use it. ATCO has plenty of room after the finish to slow down, even from 140MPH. I was surprised how well the brakes worked on the car though ;-)

I got this as a gift, so I don't know how much it was.

Man they must have had that thing choked down at the end, or a throttle limiter of some sort. That car was on its way to a 8.2 @ 170 I would guess from its 1/8 mile times. That thing was hauling ass until the last 1/8. I bet they did that so you did NOT have to use the chute. I think 150+ you have to use the chute.

Joe - Yes, there was a rev limiter set on the car, so it wouldn't go faster than 140-145. They told me I was hitting the rev limiter, but I didn't feel it at all.

In full race trim with a brake torque launch, all 4 barrels of the carburator open, and the rev limiters moved up, the car I drove is capable of mid 8's at 155MPH. You had to have a little more experience than I did to make those runs. 1 guy in the class did have that experience/certification and he was making 8 second runs at 155.

If you didn't know, the fastest I drove any car down the track before this was a measly 14.3 @ 97! Going from 14 seconds to 9 was pretty sweet!!!
