Rear Fills

Are rear fills necesary for proper imagaing??? I want my sound stage to be slamming me in the face and as forward as posible. Im going to be running a 3 way system up front (8" 6.5" and tweet) so its not like im going to need to add bass or anything, and I dont ever have any rear passengers (as if they could actually fit). This isn't a monetary thing, i just want to do this right.

If I should get somthing for the back, what should I be looking for to keep the imaging on target?

RE: Rear Fills

I've been kind of wondering the same thing, so what I did is turn the fader (stock radio) all the way up front. To be honest, I don't miss the rear speakers at all. Try it.

I think for the best imaging, you might need to use kickpods of some sort. I'm just going to put my component speakers in the factory door locations, and then when I learn what a good system sounds like, I might fool with the whole kickpod idea.

RE: Rear Fills

my feet are to big to put kick pods in, i cant give up that kind of space. Im actually trying to find a new set of door panels that I can rebuild with a lot of fibergals to make it all come together.

RE: Rear Fills

rear fill will kill all imaging. when at a live performance, how many muscians are behind you? :) The best SQ experts will often put a sub in the dash to totally elimanate any sound coming from the rear.

RE: Rear Fills

If you get a headunit with DSP's you could use rear fill just for that. If you really think you're gonna get your car to sound anything like a concert hall (really, do cars actually sound anything like a concert?) it's more than imaging. Imaging is for making your car sound more like a recording studio than a live performance. If you have a lot of live CD's, yeah ambience is cool to have. But if you want imaging like the CD was mastered for, just use front components.

I just find it funny when people associate imaging with live performances. Unless the performance is outdoors in a free-air environment (Woddstock, etc) there is always reflections that it's up to the rear speakers to replicate if that's the sound you're going for.

(PS: how are the winter tires your dad got ya doing? :p)
