Removing the gear shift lever?

There's nothing on this in my Chilton manual, figured you guys might be able to shed some light for me.

I'm trying to take off my gear shift lever... most cars, there's a screw on it somewhere, but I can't find it anywhere. Please don't tell me I have to take the whole console out. x.x

what year, if it is a 93-96 there is a large staple type deal on the front side of it, put the car down in 1st gear and look on the front of it and you will see a 1/2 inch horizontal slit in the leather, take a small flathead screw driver and remove this staple and the handle will lift off, use cation as to not pull too hard or you will rip out your overdrive wires. if it is a 97 or 98, on the bottom of the shifter stem is a plastic collet, push down on it to expose the 2 mini torques screws that hold the handle on, also be careful when lifting off, put your thumb over the shifter button so it, and the spring behind it, dont take off somewhere where you cant find them again!

There is a small hairclip down low and to the front side of the leather handle. You may need a pick or like tool to dig it out. Remove the clip to remove the shift handle.

Be careful not to break the small wiring to the OD switch.

It's a 1997, and I just tried pushing down on the collet and, well... it doesn't go down. I might not be pushing hard enough, but I didn't want to risk breaking anything. Does it need a lot of force?

patrick turn the key on and put the shifter in nuetral then push the collet down, it wont go down if its in park, sorry!

well you dont need a hammer but you need alittle force, just wrap your fingers around it and push down, there is nothing to break.
