Replace Steering "Rag Joint"

Hey everyone,

Trying to find someone who has replaced their steering shaft "Rag Joint" on a Mark VIII. I need to replace mine and it seems somewhat straight forward, however my question is as follows:
Basically there are two bolts that have to be removed, one that secures the rag joint to the gear box (steering rack), and one that attaches the other end of the rag joint to the steering column. Does the steering rack need to be lowered to provide clearance for the rag joint to be taken off or is there enough clearance to remove it without lowering the steering rack?

Would appreciate any reply concerning this. Thanks very much.

You do not need to lower the steering rack, the steering shaft telescopes to allow access to remove and replace the joint. A word of caution... the sliding shaft may very well be 'stuck' and need 'persuasion'.

Hey driller,

Can't thank you enough for your quick reply. It was a welcomed answer. Hopefully the sliding shaft will cooperate. Good on you for your help.

Another quick question if you don't mind. Have seen a couple of possible applications where instead of the typical rag joint being installed as a replacement, a steering u-joint is installed along with what I believe is a 4" length of DD shaft drilled out to accommodate the steering shaft. Would be interested in your take on this and if you think it would result in much more vibration. Thanks so much.

Many have installed a flaming river joint. It gives a more solid feel. I have one on my car. This is a common mod for those with after market headers or cobra exhaust manifolds. I have never heard anyone complain About vibrations . It will be more expensive than the stock joint.

The flaming river joint does have a more solid connection so you will have more feel to the steering wheel.

Also, when you remove the joint remember to lock the steering wheel in place so it doesn't turn to protect the clock spring from breaking. Gen 2 you have to tape the steering wheel in place.
