Hi all, I haven't been posting much lately but I thought I'd pass along some info that may be useful to some of you.
I have been driving around with a bad driverside mirror, we all now the symptom and reason. Over time the liquid in the mirror leaks and your mirror ends up looking cloudy.
I didn't want to spend a few hundred to replace the whole housing just for the mirror, so I put it off. Enough was enough, I got the mirror glass off ebay and was going to stick on the new mirror glass using double stick tape provided in the package from the seller. I realized when I got it, I could make it look better than a universal after thought bargain.
What I did is I popped off the old, cloudy mirror glass from the mirror housing.
I then removed the adhesive holding this clear lens over the cloudy mirror separating the glass into three components. Clear cover, cloudy mirror glass, and mirror backing/mount.
I was able to clean the clear cover so that I'm able to see through it perfectly.
I then mounted my new mirror glass to the old mirror backing/mounting using the double sided tape.
I then placed this into the clear cover and used silicone around the edge to secure a water tight seal.
Pic 1: This shows the three separate components of the mirror only this is the new mirror glass. Left is the clear cover, right is the cleaned up backing, and top is the new mirror.
Pic 2: This shows the back of the factory mirror glass (left) separated from the mirror backing/mounting (right).
Pic 3: This shows the broken mirror glass that I unfortunately had to break to free from the backing/mounting. My seven years of bad luck started with my Cubs being swept in the playoffs.
I would have taken better pictures along the way but I wasn't thinking of writing a procedure. If you have any questions I'll try to answer!
Oh, the best part, this fix cost about $10, and less than an hour and now I can see what's on my left!
I bought the glass off ebay, don't know if I can post the link.
