Replacing miniature interior lamps.

While cleaninig the car a few days ago, I must have sprayed the wrong fluid somewhere and shorted out a bulb that illuminates the traction control switch. So I went to the dealer to find a replacement bulb. No deal. The bulb is not sold separately and the switch is $40. Tried a couple of autoparts stores with no luck either.

Off to the junkyard to snatch one out of another Mark or any other Ford vehicle. I found a bulb, but it was a bit too big. I made it work, but the color was blue and didn't show up well in the daytime. (pictured below) The yellow cap was too small to fit the bigger bulb.

Off I go to the elctronics store. I find a 10v 3mm lamp that should work, but since it is not a normally stocked item, I gotta buy 10 @ $1.80 a piece. I'll keep looking.

So the last stop is Radio Shack where they have them in stock for $1.49 a pair. You have to take the bulb out of the twist in socket, remove the plastic color cap, place it over the new bulb, push the bulb through the socket and wrap the leads around the small "wire channels", then twist it back in. Here is the link to the Radio Shack page and a picture of what the hell I'm talking about:

A small sewing pin will help you remove the old bulb from the socket. You just need to get the wire ends out of their "channel", which is pretty tight quarters. The above bulb is the larger 4mm bulb.

RE: Replacing miniature interior lamps.

Thanks for the info. I printed it for future reference just in case.

It looks kind of like the bulbs that are in the climate control panel. I have one of the climate control bulbs out and sitting on the label in this old picture. If they are the same, there should be a pretty good number of used bulbs out there that are still good from all the people who have had to replace their controller because of the button problem.

The one I replaced is even smaller than those you have pictured. It is tiny - 3mm diameter. I was unable to find this bulb in any of the cars I searched in the yard, and I looked at probably 30 cars. I believe the lamps you have pictured are dealer items.

The picture I posted is not the actual bulb that I replaced, it is a larger bulb that looks similiar since I had already installed the smaller one.

Another option to look into may be LEDs. Just a thought, I have done various things with them as well as changing stock color lighting in past cars.

Radio Shack would have them as well as any Car Audio stores, but the car audio stores would typically have the Varad ones which is not a straight forward thing like the regular LEDs.

Another place to try is http://superbrightleds.com/

Kale I had the same happen to me, well, except that mine just burn out on it's own, I didn't spay anything down there, so I guess it's not exactly the same, but you know what I mean...

Anyway I went down to the local Ford garage and the parts guy had some bulbs from a Taurus rear defrost button. They fit perfectly. All I had to do was move the little blue cap.
