Reprogramming Keyless Remote

I had my remote transmitter go out on me. So I got out the backup one, which works just fine for Driver #2, but not for me. So I went to reprogram it (http://www.markviii.org/LOD2/remote97_98.htm) and after I enter the "permanent factory keyless entry keypad code" (found in trunk) and press the 1/2 button within 5 seconds to activate the programming mode, nothing happens, except when I enter the code, the doors unlock. Am I using the wrong code? If so, where do you find it.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

PS: I have a 1998 Mark VIII and my remotes do have the memory on/off switch on the back of them. And yes! I did check the battery in my remote that died! :D

PSS: Ok, I've been reading the board and trying to figure this out. I found different directions (http://mark8.org/lod/keyless_entry.htm) which talk about entering your personal code after the 2 second wait. I don't have a personal code so I did the permanent code twice with the 1/2 button. The locks did lock and then unlock, so it would appear it was going into programming mode. I pressed a switch on my remote, the locks went up and down. I pressed 7/8 and 9/0 to exit. Sounds good. But...when I unlock the car with the remote, it doesn't show a driver setting has been selected, the light is lite indication it's off.

This can't be that hard!

RE: Reprogramming Keyless Remote

If I recall, you MUST have a remote marked Driver 1. Why not simply reset your preferences (seat, mirror, etc) with the #2 remote?

Wait a minute, it sounds like you are trying to do something different...by chance are you trying to reprogram your outside keyless entry pad?

...the light is lite indication it's off.[/div]If you push the button marked "2" for recall on the inside driver door panel, does it go to the "2" settings?

RE: Reprogramming Keyless Remote

Programming Keyless Remote (Again!)

Ok, I'm still having trouble programming a new remote to my 1998 mark. I received a new Driver #1 remote and the service manual tells me to:

Ford-Lincoln Mercury Keyless Remote Programming

1. Enter 5-digit permanent entry code into the keyless entry keypad.

2. Within 5 seconds of pressing last button of code, press the 1/2 button. All doors will lock then unlock confirming you are in programming mode.

3. Press any button on first Keyless Remote within 5 seconds of pressing the 1/2 button. Locks will cycle to indicate successful programming.

4. If you are programming more than one Keyless Remote (Including any existing remotes) Press any button on second keyless remote within 5 seconds of previous remote. Locks will cycle again to indicate successful programming. (If the keypad light goes out before all remotes are programmed the entire process must be repeated).

5. Press the 7/8 and the 9/0 buttons simultaneously on the keypad to exit program mode.

But…when I enter the 5-digit permanent entry code (with the doors already in the locked position), the doors unlock. I hold down the 1/2 key and nadda, nothing, zip, zero. No lock then unlock to indicate it’s in programming mode.

When I try it with the doors in the unlocked position, the doors try to unlock. I hold down the 1/2 key and same as before, nada, nothing, zip, zero.

For something so simple I sure am having a hard time getting it to play out as it’s supposed to. Of course I have thought that maybe I have a computer problem, but I’m not getting any error codes and everything else seems to be fine. My second remove, Driver #2 works just fine and I keep the switch on the back in the off position so it doesn’t loose my girlfriends seat settings.

Does anyone have an idea as to what the deal is.

Thanks!

PS: I could easily enough just throw the Driver #1 remote away, reprogram my settings as driver #2, but that wouldn't be fixing the problem. Sure it would work, but...why can't I simply add a new remote to it?

RE: Reprogramming Keyless Remote

Many Gen 2 owners have had similar problems - I think there may be something incorrect in the published procedure. I myself experienced similar problems, but somehow, after a certain combination of steps, (which I can't remember now), I was able to program all the remotes.

I recently sold mine, and the new owner reported similar problems programming remote 2, (remote 1 was still programmed). He later emailed me back stating he was finally successful, but couldn't state the exact steps. He said he just kept trying different things and that something finally worked...

RE: Reprogramming Keyless Remote

Whew! I figured it out! That was a pain in the rear! Thanks for the heads up!

They left out the part about entering your own personal code. Without entering it, nothing will happen.

Here you go!

1. Enter 5-digit permanent entry code into the keyless entry keypad. (This can be found on the hinge in the trunk or behind the small door on the left side of the trunk)

2. Within 5 seconds of pressing last button of code Press the 1/2 button.

3. Enter your PERSONAL CODE and which personality to assign it to:

1-2 recalls personality 1
3-4 recalls personality 2
9-0 does not recall a personality

3. All doors will lock then unlock confirming you are in programming mode.

4. Press any button on DRIVER #1 Keyless Remote within 5 seconds of pressing the 1/2 button. Locks will cycle to indicate successful programming.

5. If you are programming one remote, skip to Step 8. (If you skip Steps 6 and 7 any additional remotes you might have will not work)

6. If you are programming more than one Keyless Remote (including any existing remotes). Press which personality to assign it to (see above) and press any button on second keyless remote within 5 seconds of previous remote.

7. Locks will cycle again to indicate successful programming. (If the keypad light goes out before all remotes are programmed the entire process must be repeated).

8. Press the 7/8 and the 9/0 buttons simultaneously on the keypad to exit program mode.

RE: Reprogramming Keyless Remote

Kool! I imagine if you don't have a personal code, you'd probably have to enter the factory default code, (I never used a personal code).

This info should be added to the faq pages here - it seems to come up several times a year.

In step 6, if programming additional remotes, do you also have to enter your personal code again, like the first time?

RE: Reprogramming Keyless Remote

I updated step 6. OOPS! I don't know what it will do if you enter the permanent code twice. Guess I can try. I've just about worn out my seat motor from playing with it! :)

If you are programming more than one remote, I didn't have to re-enter the codes, just press which driver personality the next remote is for and then press any key on the remote. The locks cycle, both remotes are programmed, Press the 7/8 and the 9/0 buttons simultaneously to exit.

Hope it helps.

1. Enter 5-digit permanent entry code into the keyless entry keypad. (This can be found on the hinge in the trunk or behind the small door on the left side of the trunk)

2. Within 5 seconds of pressing last button of code Press the 1/2 button.

3-4 recalls personality 2
9-0 does not recall a personality

3. All doors will lock then unlock confirming you are in programming mode.

4. Press any button on DRIVER #1 Keyless Remote within 5 seconds of the locks cycling.
