Rough Starting - Sometimes

I have a 97 Mark. It’s still pretty low mileage, around 45k. On two occasions, early in the morning, I’ve had a hard time starting it and can’t for the life of me figure it out. When it happens, there is a “horrible” sound while the starter is turning over the engine, almost like a “grinding” sound. But…if I persist long enough it will finally start up, albeit the engine runs rough until it clears itself out.

It’s always been the first start of the day and early in the morning when every thing is cold, it’s never happened any other time. Of course our cold is around 40 degrees.

During any other start I never hear the “grinding” noise and when it is having a hard time starting the starter seems to be turning the engine over just fine. I can’t really tell where it’s coming from.

It’ might be a coincidence, but each time the fuel lever was down to about 1/4 of a tank.

Anyone ever run upon anything like this?
