Setting Up Your Webspace with Internet Explorer

Paid LOD members are entitled to 20MB of webspace, below is a list of instructions explaining how to set-up your personal site using Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser. This information assumes you are using Microsoft Windows and have a version of Internet Explorer which allows FTP transfer. To request space, send an email to

It's really quite simple, just go to, not The address should change to You will be prompted to login, if not select FILE> LOG IN AS from the file menu. Enter your username and password then click the "Log On" button.

After you login, you should see a blank window. This is your "root" directory. If you cannot login make sure the username and password were entered exactly as specified in your set-up letter, both are case sensitive. If you still can't login, try other combinations, all lowercase, all uppercase, or capitalize the first letter. It is possible that the set-up letter is incorrect . You can bookmark the site and choose to remember the password to access your site quickly and easily. To bookmark, do one of the following:

1) Press CTRL-D while on the page you want to bookmark.
2) From the top left menu options, choose Favorites> Add to Favorites> Okay
3) Form the Favorites sidebar, Click the ADD button at the top left.

You can rename the link whatever you like. Placing the bookmark inside the Links folder will add it to the Links Toolbar which allows 1 click access to the webpage, no need to navigate through your favorites folder looking for the link.

Now that you're logged on, you can drag and drop files from anywhere on your computer into this window to upload the file. You can also copy and paste files. Any files or folders uploaded to your "root" directory will appear here:

So a picture named "mycar.jpg" located on neilster's root folder will appear here:

To download a file, just drag the file from the FTP window to a folder on your hard drive. The process is the same as navigating your local computer files using the Windows Explorer interface. The same way you would copy a file to a floppy drive, you can copy that file to a remotely located computer.

TIPS
When uploading and downloading files, you must keep your FTP window open, and open an additional window using Windows Explorer. When you close the FTP window, you end your FTP session. It is a good idea to delete spaces in your filenames. Replace them with underscores to make your life easier. It's also a good idea to create a folder on your hard drive that mirrors your LOD website. This way you can keep track of your files and have local copies to ease updating and organization.

OTHER OPTIONS
You can use any number of aplications to upload and downlaod files via FTP. Click [|HERE] to search for current FTP programs. Some others I have used are WS_FTP, CuteFTP, SmartFTP, and EFTP. The latter allows encryption wile transferring data. More and more software companies are incorporating encryption into their FTP software. You may also want to read the message on setting up your site using WS_FTP elsewhere in this forum.
