shaved door handles and factory alarm system

I've been looking on the web at all the different systems for shaved handles and was wondering if anyone knows if it affects the factory alarm system (bypasses it) or if it will remain the same. Also does anyone have any opinions on systems out there.

RE: shaved door handles and factory alarm system

My brother's Chevelle has shaved handles, and they are not high on the list of things I would do to a Mark VIII. Mainly because the handles are already sunk into the body of the car, they don't protrude like the Chevelle's handles. The car's design is not compromised. It makes the simple task of opening a door just that much more complicated. Plus, the doors are very heavy on our cars which is just asking for problems. On an all out project car getting new paint and a bevy of other goodies, I might consider it, but I would keep the key pad. That would be slick, have the keypad unlock and open the door!

I'm sure you can wire it so that it doesn't interfere with the factory alarm. I'd go with an aftermarket alarm so you can wire both doors, your trunk, airbags, windows, sunroof, etc. if you wish.

The reasoning behind the shaved handles is 1. the damn door handle keeps braking and 2. the car is getting a paint job this winter. The kits I was looking at controlled both doors, the trunk, windows, and one optional button (I'd probably use it as a remote starter). I've just had problems on previous cars when I put aftermarket alarms on. After shaving the handles I don't think I'll need an alarm anyway.

I understand your problem with the door handle, but you might just replace your mechanical problems with electrical ones! Especially if you are trying to control windows and the ignition (remote start isn't high on my list either).

I would intergrate everything into a single alarm system that can control everything. Whatever you decide, you DEFINITELY still need an alarm system.

My Door handle broke, I replaced it, and now the alarm goes off whenever I use the key to get into the car. If I use the keypad it does not. Any ideas?

I don't think the key disarms the car alarm. I think the only thing that disarms the car alarm is the keypad or the remote. Using the key would be the same thing as using a slim jim to get the lock open, its all mechanical.

People still use KEYS to unlock doors? I thought that went out with the carbeurator!

The problem is that when you unlock the door via the key, it activates a different circuit than when done via the keypad. You could rewire it so that the key activates the keypad circuit or you could just get keyless entry.

Also, looking at the schematic, the door handle is a switch as well. Does the alarm go off when the car is unlocked via the key, or when the handle is raised? If it is the latter, I'll bet that there's a wire somewhere that's not connected.

BTW - Did you know that pressing the 3/4 button within five seconds unlocks the passenger side door?

It happens when the handle is raised. I also noticed that the alarm light used to blink, and now it stays solid when I close the door.

Incidently, I notice I'm having a problem with the middle brake light on the gen2. I like to use the automatic lights, and when I start the car, the lights come on as the key travels through accessory to start. When the engine cranks, the middle light goes out. If I turn the lights off and on again by hand, the light comes back. If I start the car and then move to the auto lights, the light will come on. Do you think maybe these two electrical problems could be related? Has either thing happened to anyone else?

3/4? I knew that one. 5/6 for the trunk. 7/8 and 9/0 at the same time (anytime) locks the doors.

I did not know that! Used the trunk opener trick twice today out of convenience. Very cool!

As far as the two problems I don't think they are related. Your alarm problem is just a wire that isn't connected.

Ok, I'll look into it. Glad you are enjoying the tricks :)
