shifting method

I'm going back to Commerce GA 11/8/03 for SSHS3, and I'm looking for opinions on shifting 1st to 2nd manually versus letting trans shift automatically. I don't expect to have to worry about 3rd, as car is same as last year, and at 94,95 mph, you are still below redline with 3.08 gears. The MK8 is stock as a stove, by the way.

Some people say manual shift @ 6000 is best, others say let trans do it's own thing.

Opinions???????????

Well leaving it in drive is the fastest way to go slow.

First and foremost turn off TC and OD and stab it from a dead idle, do NOT lean on the converter at all, this will cost you a tenth minimum.
Shift it right at 6k and leave it in second (with stock gears only) for the trip through the traps.

RE: shifting method

I'm scared to 1-2 Shift now. I just got the shift kit put in, but also a new built tranny. If I screw up this Trans. No more car for me. ;(

what should I do Geno. Does the 1-2 Really screw up the Transmission bad ?.

I Need To Race ! But I need to drive smart.

I have no idea why people think that manual shifting will do damage or cause pre-mature wear?

In drive (stock) the trans shifts slushy and slippy, manual shifting is a no slip and an abrupt firm crisp shift (93-95's)

If you could manually shift all the time everytime you drove the car (normally) and eliminated all that slip the trans would live longer.

Now since you have the shift kit the shifts should be fine at WOT depending on where (rpm's) its actually shifting at.

RE: shifting method

I dropped .2 by shifting manually (before my chip)

With the chip, i just leave it in drive because i got the same times doing it both ways.

RE: shifting method

I only used the Manual shifts and got a best time of 14.8 . I think im going to get a chip soon, but wouldn't you still shift manually or does the Chip give those nice shifts automatically.

I was told to use the Manual shifts by Pony and he is a pretty wise fella, so I listened. I'm going to let the car run itself and shift and see how I do next time.

RE: shifting method

I got better times manually shifting. I also noticed that if I shift at around 5500, it shifts harder. Note that the car will hesitate a bit and the RPMS will raise somewhat before it actually shifts. Sometimes letting it get over 6K wouldn't produce a chirp. This was gathered by punching it while getting on the Freeway more than anything else.

I also got better times stalling the converter. Punching it off the line always ended up in a burnout. Either way you can get good times, but it depends on your tires more than anything. I ran better short times on normal HR rated tires than the ZR variety I have been using for the last few years. Go figure...

Stock= Manual Shift.

Chipped= Drive with od off.

Its funny because I used to challenge people to outshift our shift programming and they never could.

RE: shifting method

Please, correct me if I am wrong, but I heard these(stock 94 Mark VIII) Trans have a feature that basically works like a true "manual valve body".. in other words, if you start off in 1st, it stays in first, until you shift to 2nd, in which case it will stay in second until you shift to Drive(3rd). If this is the case, can you just start out in Drive, and at about 5750 rpms(or any desired rpm) manually pull it down into second? In other words, does it matter if you start out in first, or drive, as long as you shift it when you want to, as opposed to letting it shift itself?
The reason I ask is, when left in Drive, at W.O.T., my STOCK 94 tends to "nose over" at 6000 prior to shifting itself to 2nd. If I manually pull it into second at about 5700 or so, it doesnt nose over, it just squats, chirps and goes.

I'll be running my car down the 1320 tomorrow(Wed) and I want to run the best e.t. possible. the catch is, we only get about 2 time runs before elims start, and I havent raced this car yet, so I dont want to be all over the place e.t. wise since I will have to dial-in after only 2 time runs. Not exactly the best time to try out a few different methods, so I thought I would ask those that have already tried them all.

RE: shifting method

If you're bracket racing, let it shift itself. That's the way to be most consistent.

RE: shifting method

When I'm bracket racing I do the following to help keep the times consistant:
1. Turn off the air ride system
2. OD, traction control and AC off
3. let the trans shift itself
4. leave the line at 1,000 rpm's
5. shallow stage
6. rear tires at 20 psi, fronts at 40 psi
7. avoid the water & do a small burnout

RE: shifting method

Do you have a chip that eliminates the rev limiter ?
If not you may be bouncing off the rev limiter at 6000 rpms.

Good luck, I went to the first SSHS down in Florida several years ago and had a blast. My best times have come with leaving it in drive. :)

RE: shifting method

I am trying to accomplish two things. 1) lowest e.t. possible, and 2) consistency. In all honesty, I am not concerned with being competitive, I just want to see what this stock 94 will run in our conditions, which generally, are more ideal than alot of the east coast guys. However, being a drag racing addict, one the eliminations start, I will hit the brakes when necessary, so consistency will be key one elims commence. BUT, before all that happens, since we generally only get 2 time runs, i was hoping to discover the method I should use to obtain the quickest e.t. prior to "dila-in"... make sense? I have also heard that leaving the air ssuspension switch ON helps the car squat and transfer weight. other's have advise to turn it OFF to keep the car from doing the top end dance...I have driven 130 mph on small tire bracket cars.. the top end dance in a 4000 lb sled cant be any worse than a 10 sec ride!

I will probably:
t/c off, o/d off, launch at idle, manually shift at approx 5800rpm's from Drive to second, and then hang on til the stripe.

For some reason, my car stops pulling a tad just before it shifts itself into second, and I feel that may rob me from some e.t., so I'll manually yank it into second just prior to that point so I am under constant acceleration, then leave it in second until I cross the stripe.
