Sooty Tailpipes

:lolgrin003:I know this is a stupid question guys but if the fuel pump is going bad would that cause the car to run rich or lean? My 93 is running rich. It smells like gas at idle. Also its turning my tailpipes black. Fuel pressure is 32-35 psi at idle and 35-38 psi at wot. All sensors have been changed including both o2s, cleaned maf, 764s, 9mm wires, coils, etc. At wot, it feels like it kicks back at top end. Thats why I'm suspecting fuel pressure.

My car idles rich. I was told the O2 sensors were not working at idle for some reason?

OP: Do you have a chip? Or any other modifications such as different MAF or intake?

Does your car burn any oil?

No chip installed. Same MAF. It only started doing this when I removed the airbox and put on a cone filter. Car runs great either way. Its just annoying if anything.:( No oil burn either.

There you go that is why I asked you if you messed with the air intakes... I would recommend putting the stop setup back on. The cone filters do very little if anything to improve performance on our cars.

+1

especially in a trouble shooting scenario..put it back to stock.

Which cone filter setup did you use? If the filter is too small and thus restrictive, thats teh problem. This is why I am not a fan of filters that use oil. The oil clogs the filter from day one. If the filter is not a lot larger to make up for that the car runs heavy with fuel which in turn can increase "power".

To answer the original question....no. :D And if your pump is going "bad", it all depends what "bad" is. If the pump is failing, you'll lose pressure causing a lean condition which in turn will just plain make the car fall on its face.

I put a bigger cone I had in the garage on while I was at it I went ahead and cleaned the MAF again really good. I would say the filter is about a 12-14inch cone. Not having the problem anymore. The filter I had on it wasn't much shorter than the one I have on now. Maybe it was the filter and the maf might have been a little dirty? Problem solved.:wave022:
