Speed control illumination

The 1997 Mark 8 has a bulb out at the fingertip controls of the cruise control on/off buttons. Is there a precaution i need to take in changing the bulb? It looks like i would have to remove the airbag just to change the bulb. Is this true? Has anyone done this procedure before?

Thanks for any suggestions.

The manual shows the basic procedure for access to the speed control switches involves removal of the airbag, the steering wheel and the back cover of steering wheel. Evidently there are retaining screws from the backside as well as the front.

RE: Speed control illumination

I didn't think you could replace the bulb. Mine have been intermittant since i got the car.

RE: Speed control illumination

I had a hunch about the bulb being burnt out in the first place. When i first got the 97 Mark 8 the wiring to the airbag had to be replaced. That wiring controled the lighting on the cruise control buttons, the cruise control, the cruise control light on the dash(Speed Control) the horn, and it made the orange light at the information center stop blinking. My hunch was that one set of these cruise control buttons would not work. I was right. The On/Off don't work and the accel/resume/coast buttons illuminate like they should. I'm worried about making the airbag deploy trying to change this bulb. Does anyone have a manual for the 97 that tells you the precaution steps to take while changing out that bulb?

Driver Side Air Bag Module

Removal

WARNING: THE ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT NECESSARY FOR SYSTEM DEPLOYMENT IS POWERED DIRECTLY FROM THE BATTERY. TO AVOID AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY, THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE MUST BE DISCONNECTED PRIOR TO SERVICING OR REPLACING ANY SYSTEM COMPONENTS.

NOTE: If the driver side air bag module did not deploy in a collision, it may not have been needed. Complete all diagnostics before replacing the driver side air bag module.

Disconnect the battery ground cable; refer to Section 414-01 . Wait for one minute for the backup power supply energy to be depleted.
WARNING: ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN SERVICING AN AIR BAG VEHICLE AND WHEN HANDLING AN AIR BAG MODULE TO AVOID POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY.

Remove the two steering wheel back cover plugs.

Remove the two screw and washer assemblies.

WARNING: CARRY A LIVE AIR BAG WITH THE BAG AND THE TRIM POINTED AWAY FROM YOUR BODY. AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT WILL THEN DEPLOY WITH A MINIMAL CHANCE OF INJURY.

WARNING: PLACE THE AIR BAG MODULE ON A BENCH WITH TRIM COVER FACING UP TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY.

Remove the driver side air bag module.
Carefully pull the driver side air bag module away from the steering wheel (3600).
Disconnect the driver side air bag electrical connector.

Installation

NOTE: When replacing a driver side air bag module, a prepaid return postcard is provided with the replacement driver side air bag module. The serial number for the new part and vehicle identification number (VIN) must be recorded and sent to Ford Motor Company.

Fill out the air bag module verification card if applicable.
WARNING: CARRY A LIVE AIR BAG WITH THE BAG AND TRIM COVER POINTED AWAY FROM YOUR BODY. AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT WILL THEN DEPLOY WITH A MINIMAL CHANCE OF INJURY.

Install the driver side air bag module.
Connect the driver side air bag electrical connector.
Carefully position the driver side air bag module.

Install the two screw and washer assemblies.

Install the two steering wheel back cover plugs.

Connect the battery ground cable.
Prove out the air bag system; refer to the Prove Out Procedure in this section.

RE: Speed control illumination

OK, I had the same issue... you can pry the cover with a screw driver, no need to remove air bag, or steering wheel, just be very careful not to break the plastic cover. Its not very easy to change the bulbs, because they are integrated into the board... best, and easiest thing to do is to go to a junk yard, and pick up the entire assembly, and plug it into yours, you can get this part from older years and it will work just fine. If you do get it from a first gen, be sure to get both sides, as the fist gens have brighter buttons, and im sure you would like for them to match.

RE: Speed control illumination

My manual also says to disconnect the positive battery cable after disconnecting the negative cable.

Thanks for all the tips. I'm going to go to the Ford Dealership and get some of those bulbs. I don't think you can buy just one bulb. They have to sell it to you in a pack. I will check it out and let ya know how everything turns out. I may just go to the junk yard to. Thanks for the help guys!

RE: Speed control illumination

I dont know about the bulbs. Highly doubtfull they will be able to sell ya some. There not the twist and set kind that are replaceable. The bulbs are set into and soldered to the mini circuit board. The dealer will say you have to buy "the assembly" if they have it available at all.
You'll have to order some from an electronics outlet and use a nice solder sucker and solder new ones in. Take a look at my pics. I had mine apart checking mine with DVM.
