[div class="dcquote"][strong]Quote[/strong] i don't however have a push cutoff that goes to the outside of the car. Think this will be an issue? [/div]Better get a remote cutoff. I believe I heard last year there was a big stink over a car that did not have one with the rear-mounted battery.

Just ordered one from Summitt.

RE: SSHS6

I just read the entire long list of rules. I found this and will comply, but I am wondering what they mean by "red flash" for the markings. Do i just paint the push T handle red or do they mean "flash" as in a 9 Volt battery and LED continuously flashing beacon to indicate the position of cutoff switch? I'm probably blowing this out of porportion, and the triangle sticker that comes with it saying PUSH OFF will be enough?

Copied and pasted from their site as follows.

8.4 MASTER CUTOFF
Mandatory when battery is relocated, or as outlined in Class Requirements. An electrical power cutoff switch (one only) must be installed on the rearmost part of each vehicle and be easily accessible from outside the car body. This cutoff switch must be connected to the positive side of the electrical system and must stop all electrical functions including magneto ignition. The external control switch for this cutoff switch will be clearly indicated by a red flash inside a white-edged blue triangle with a base of at least 12 cm (see drawing 25). The positions must be clearly indicated with the word "OFF". If switch is "push/pull" type, push must be the action for shutting off the electrical system, pull to turn it on. Any rods or cables used to activate the switch must be minimum 1/8-inch (3.2 mm) diameter. Plastic or keyed switches prohibited. Switches and/or controls must be located behind rear wheels on rear engine dragsters.

RE: SSHS6

I think 'drawing 25' would be a white-edged blue triangle with a RED LIGHTNING BOLT in it.

Here is a copy/paste from http://www.nhra.com/contacts/tech_faq.html

I have a street car that I occasionally run at the strip. I've relocated the battery to the rear. What else do I need?
Any car with a relocated battery must be equipped with a master electrical cutoff, capable of stopping all electrical functions including ignition (must shut the engine off, as well as fuel pumps, etc.). The switch must be located on the rear of the vehicle, with the "off" position clearly marked. If the switch is of a "push / pull" type, then "push" must be the motion that shuts off the switch, and plastic or "keyed" typed switches are prohibited. Also, the battery must be completely sealed from the driver and/or driver compartment. This means a metal bulkhead must separate the trunk from the driver compartment, or the battery must be located in a sealed, metal box constructed of minimum .024 inch steel or .032 inch aluminum, or in an NHRA accepted plastic box. In cars with a conventional trunk, metal can simply be installed behind the rear seat and under the package tray to effectively seal the battery off from the driver. In a hatchback type vehicle the battery box is usually the easiest solution, since the alternative is to fabricate a bulkhead which seals to the hatch when closed. At present, Moroso is the only company which offers an NHRA accepted plastic battery box, part number 74050.

But I drive on the street. I don't want a big cut off switch hanging on the back.
This solution takes a little work, but it solves the problem. Install the master cutoff inside the vehicle, positioned "sideways" so that the toggle moves forward and back. Drill a hole in the toggle handle, and attach a steel rod that will run out the back of the car, through a hole drilled completely through one tail light assembly. Have a spare tail light assembly on hand, so when you come home from the drags, you remove the rod and put the cherry tail light back in for street cruising. Next time you plan on going to the drag strip, swap lights and reinstall the rod. Since the drilled light is for the strip only, you can also have it marked "PUSH OFF" in big letters so the Tech Inspectors will think you're cool.

RE: SSHS6

Thanks Driller.
I was thinking of doing the tail light install, rembering a mustang setup i saw in a magazine. But our lights are too far over to the right for my setup. I was looking at it yesterday and I will probably just go straight through the upper part of the rear cover below the trunk line. That should keep it in specs being on the bumper area. It shouldn't look too bad when I remove the T handle for the street and put a black rubber plug in there. I'll put pics in a separate post.

RE: SSHS6

Very nice. I wish i wrapped my headers like that before they were installed. The next set will definately be done. I gotta go see that guy. I like his work and the mounts.
Get rid of some of my kinks and bends. He does alot of mandrel 45's and i like that, plus the ability to take it apart in pieces is worth the drive up there all by itself. I got too many 90 degree crimped bends in my exhaust for my liking.

RE: SSHS6

I have searched high and low for the NHRA certified blue triangle battery disconnect "Push Off" sticker and cannot find one.

After calling Summitt Racing they said at all the big national events that they have a NHRA trailer there on scene that usually sells the stickers. I hope they will be at the event with the trailer, because these things are impossible to find to purchase on the internet.
They suggested to find a pic on the internet and print it out on sticky paper in full color, but i want the vinyl sticker that will last a while in the rain i can leave on there.
The one that came with the cuttoff switch is typed out and not accepted according to the rules a blue triangle with white border with lightning bolt above it.

Also on a second note, the switch is spring loaded to the off position. What keeps it locked ON when the T handle is pulled out to ON position? Do people use a very thin zip tie or safety wire that can break easily when the switch is pushed in to kill it?

Or when it gets power does it latch? I assume it's only a manual high amp relay inside the case and has no latching curcuit.

RE: SSHS6

Nevermind on the above post. I found it. The switch does lock, and is spring loaded to off. I just didnt turn it hard enough because i didnt want to break it. When i was measuring everything out and messing with the bracket, i turned it hard and it locked into on position. Should be no problem now. (Takes quite a bit of pressure to set it to lock on, which is fine by me and a better connection.)

I am switching the location to have the T handle sitting horizontal right next to the lincoln emblem on trunklid since it is already drilled and bolted with the spolier. It will look alot cleaner there i think than having it stick out of the bumper. Also, theres a whole lot of metal back there to drill through if i did it the bumper way.

RE: SSHS6

Just got second tech card in mail. Are we supposed to send them back to him? At my track here we just give the inspector the card when we check in. Not sure if they are pre collecting the cards or not for SSHS6.

Cool, thanks JP. I just looked at the SSHS6 page and saw my name, but no car. No biggie. Just wanted to make sure.
I picked number 455 to carry the Pontiac flag of my old 455 Super Duty in my 79 Trans Am I regret terribly for selling. If i can get the Lincoln to run flat 12's like it some day, she will get her own flag in the garage. :)

RE: SSHS6

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, I plan to be there. I'll be sending a PM. ;)

RE: SSHS6

Well, Mrs. Driller and I will be off to Atlanta tomorrow afternoon in the Blue Flame for the SSHS6 event.

I will be getting my chip back from Lonnie tomorrow morning after some tweaking on the tune. The car has new injectors, has been serviced and is ready. The only outstanding issue is the exhaust leak at the drivers side header(despite two temporary repair attempts with JB Weld).

Weather looks to be sunny to partly cloudy, cool with lows in the 30s and highs around 60. Should make for some good runs. :9

Checking in...

We stopped at Mooresville, NC, north of Charlotte.

Cooling fan seems to be going out? I'll check it in the morning and may need to locate a replacement and try to install it in the parking lot.

RE: SSHS6

OK, I emailed the guy Jeremi posted.

I've never heard of wrong way fan motors? Regardless, I can check with the local parts store here in the am.

Mike, see what you can find and call me on my cell. I'm only 3 hours plus from Commerce and can most likely make the trip in the cool air with the change in the weather. I probably have enough tools to do what needs to be done except maybe a drill.

Worst case, I'll call Max at Five Star and have him overnight one to the Hampton for Saturday AM delivery.

Napa website says the motor spins clockwise. Make sure to check the spin direction of the fan, as the guys having trouble spin counter clockwise, while most of the fans for sale spin clockwise.[/div]

I presume CW/CCW is looking at the shaft end?

Thanks for the heads up.

RE: SSHS6

Well, we made it. :)

BTW, I did pick up a cooling fan motor... from NAPA. The 93 has CW rotation, so the CW fan from NAPA suited me. With the unusually cool weather, the engine temps haven't been a problem on the highway.

Met up with Mike, Jeff and Marvin at Sonics as scheduled.

Later we all went to Atlanta Dragway for a test and tune session. Mike is no longer Mr. 15 flat, Jeff ran a couple good runs and I nursed the night with a malfunctioning cooling fan but managed a new best time in my second run with a 13.524 @ 101.83.
