Temptation - Took a bite of the Apple - Got a MacBook Air

After being a PC/Microsoft user for almost 20 years I finally got an Apple. Ordered it today for my Wife for her Christmas gift. The Acer laptop she had was a piece of junk and broke last year. I was looking at PC netbooks at 1/2 the cost but was not impressed. The iPad did not have the built in web chat camera she uses to chat with her family. The MacBook Air was an in between laptop and iPad. Touch screens are ok but the smugs drive me crazy and my fat fingers like typing on real keys.
With no mechanical hard drive the battery left is said to be about 5 hours, with 30 days on standby.

Will need to wait an see if it is worth the hype.

And yes Max, posted the same thing on CFOT, lol

they look like nice devices, congrats. I have an itouch and ipad but I think thats it for me

I got her an itouch last year. It is nice but needs more of a computer. Her sister has the iPad and she likes that but the lack of a built in web cam and USB post was a deal breaker.

I bought a macbook pro this summer, I'm officially converted. Bought an iPad this fall as well. They both are made well and run smoothly. Converting to the Mac OS really wasn't a big deal at all.

I thought about one, but after getting a new iMac in the office for development work on iPad apps, I wasn't that impressed (even after adding a SSD drive). I did test drive one of the new MacBook Air(s) and couldn't really differentiate much from the iMac.

Mrs. Driller wants an iPad for Christmas.

So does BadSax... :D

My MacBookPro has been dropped at least half a dozen times, a few of those times from more then just a few feet... it's also had coffee spilled across it twice and once from behind which filled the inside of it with coffee (which was super exciting when I picked it up and coffee poured out if it)... Anyway, it's still alive and well...

They are worth the money if for no other reason then they are so well built.

I have prime, free for 3 months if your a parent/grandparent etc. Look up amazon prime mom

I got it from MacMall. Free shipping, no tax and $49 off the entry model with no add ons. It is going to be used mostly for Web surfing and Web video chat with her family and the baby.
The lack of reseller competition is the turn off of Mac that keeps the prices high.

I've been reading some real positive reviews about the McBook Air but so far held off purchasing. Getting weak though. :)

You can get a good deal at Amazon and no tax or shipping if you have Amazon Prime.

I got my macbook pro from the refurb part of the apple web site, I saved about $200. It looked absolutely new when it arrived. I also bought a time capsule refurb ($100 savings), again, it looked and functioned as new.

Good review. I was debating between the Mac Air and the iPad since she is going to primarily use it for web surfing. But the limitations of the current iPad using a mobile browsers and lack of built in camera swayed me to the Air. It is also nice to have a real keyboard and not smudge your screen. It would have been nice if it did have the backlit keyboard.
I read about needing to do any memory upgrading at the time of ordering. But I highly doubt she will ever needed it and less ram should use less power slightly extending the battery life.
The only thing i may get the external writable DVD drive.

Well the UPS guy tossed it on the porch about 7:30 tonight, i would think something that cost almost $1K would require a signature. Prof of delivery: Left with man.

It is a very nice quality computer. Aimee just got home, i had set it up for her and DLed the latest updates. She was thrilled, no way could i keep it under wraps to Christmas.

Started to acclimate myself to the Mac OS. I like that you can click the touch pad.

So does safari have a setting for tabs like the other latest browsers?

While Safari is active, click on the "Safari" menu, go to "Preferences" and you'll see a button for Tabs where you can set Tabs settings.

Found the Tabs settings and I moved the dock bar, or what ever it is called to the side to give more vertical room.

We had to download fire fox because her employee work sight was only compatible with it on a Mac.

Downloaded all the latest Mac OS updates, iTunes, Flash, Yahoo messenger and Open Office for her. Also with Comcast I get free Norton internet security and antivirus so that is installed even though no one cares too much to write a virus for Macs. lol

I know the green + button maximizes but it does not fill the whole screen, is there a trick to do that or do you have to resize it manually?

The zoom works nice with the browser. The screen does have very high resolution but it size makes it hard to see some text with out the zoom.
Started learning all the gestures for the touch pad, it is real nice.

I played with her sisters iPad, but the MAB was defiantly worth getting over it for what Aimee’s need are.

I have used an Imac for a little over a year now, 0 regrets, I love the screen etc. I have been using Windows since 1995ish... I feel like the OS is kind of a non issue win 7 is fine now. I still use XP for work, and i really like that OS.

Apple just makes a lot of things in life easier and organizes the media in a near perfect way out of the box.

If their prices were more competitive with PCs I am sure they would sell a lot more. But what makes them more user friendly and reliable by controlling the hardware and software, lack of backwards comparability on some things is what makes them cost more.
