The Final New Beater...

Thanks, Charlie! :) If I ever find out how that thing failed, I will let you know. No word why was sent with the replacement. I really do not think they will ever figure that one out, as everything inside that case was destroyed.

I am real excited to see the new brakes and rims on the car. It is going to be awesome. :)

lol I promised myself I was going to leave this car alone... Well, so much for keeping that promise... I tried real hard not to, but this thing was screaming real loud for some new rims and tires, and the stock 16" rims really look like crap to me. :) I did the next best thing, and bought it some new old shoes on ebay. :)

These are off a newer Mercedes SL 500, and are OEM Mercedes 18" sport rims that have the factory mounted Pilot Sports still on. They are staggered 8 1/2" wide in the front, and 9 1/2" wide in the rear.

What do you guys think?

those will look real good on the sl

wish i could afford to call a mercedes a beater lol

Thanks, everyone. :) I am still glad I bought this beater. I have put about a thousand miles on it now, and still enjoy driving it. Can't say that about the Jeep, and the R/T though. I think it took me about two weeks to realize those vehicles did not do it for me. My daughter still loves the R/T though. :)

I agree Scott, the "C" word is for when Wendy drives the car. I am beginning to think she likes it better than her minivan. lol, She drops the top to go to the post office and back home. :) Hopefully, these rims will make it look a little less cute, and a little more handsome :)

Max, I purchased the rims and tires from a BWM, and Mercedes rim and tire dealer, that guarantees OEM perfect fitment, without hub spacers, on any M-B R129 chassis - that would be me :) These rims are SL specific, not like some of the others seen on ebay that say they can be used on multiple M-B chassis.

Good :) I was just thinking that you're going at least 2" wider on the rim than stock... so I didn't know if they made any changes later on to the car... those are some really nice tires too!

Pricy as hell but nice...

Finally mounted the new rims. :) Lost some ride and tire noise quality, but I think it makes up for it in the looks and handling department.

Thanks Max :) Yes, it has the hard top too. I purchased a cart for it on ebay to roll it into the garage, and save some space.

It is nice to have the hard top on when the leafs start to fall, and pollen season begins. That cloth top is tough to keep clean, and the trash off it during certain times of the year.

Those wheels and the hardtop really make it a different looking car.

So, no more mods, eh? :D

After seeing the beater in Atlanta last weekend, I was even more impressed in person. ;)

lol Thanks, everyone! :) Still enjoying the beater... I am going to do some mods to it. Well, not like the Mark though... From what I have been researching about this car, the cooling system is something that many M-B owners try to modify because of head gasket failure similar to a Ford 3.8 v6.

Some of the cause is head gasket material related, and some is temp related.

The temps fluctuate a whole bunch in this car, especially during 100f+ rush hour days in traffic jams.

90c (194f) in stop and go traffic is the desired goal - or as close to it as possible for this car by the owners. The car has two electric fans, and a viscous fan clutch. I found some tricks on the web to make the fan clutch engage earlier, and also ordered a harness from a guy that changes the resistance of the combo CTS and ECT sensor, that tricks the car to turn on the fans at 94c. :)

Funny, as I thought with this car, most of the stuff for this car is special order/dealer only. One of the first things I replaced on the car was the radiator cap. Well, it is a dealer only part. Not only that, I had to give them the VIN so I got the correct one for the car.

Sweet ride. Last year I sold my '97 S320 LWB. Great car, had the same motor as your SL. That I-6 isn't all that bad on the highway. Enjoy!.

Did that radiator cap also cost $40?!

I hate dealers and try to avoid them like a plague. I6s are my favorite engines though... suuuuuper smooth.

Oh btw my Vette goes up to 230F in traffic and "they all do that". Where as my crown vic stays at 200 no matter what I do... I had 5 ppl OD off AC on 3500rpms uphill for 2000 feet or so of ELAVATION shange and the temp gauge didn't even move.
