The Flu Commeth

I've never been a victim of much of anything in my life except good luck -- but my oh my --

Even weeks AFTER a flu shot - I just came off the worst health week of my life. I have NEVER been this sick - for this long - in my entire 49 years on earth.

If you can avoid the flu that's going around - do it.

I haven't been able to work - sleep - think straight - lay down - stand up - or even eat (gasp!) for six days. Today, the seventh - I'm feeling better - but still have uncontrolled coughing spells.

Quick - get your flu shots - then and go over and wipe down your Grandma and Grandpa with alcohol.

This must be a terrorist germ.

RE: The Flu Commeth

I have been using an AMAZING product to combat colds. It's called COLD-FX. In REAL FDA tests showed a reduction of symptoms in 87% of test subject, and is the only cold medication to pass that test. It is used by most professional sporting teams, and is legal for Olympic use. I have most everyone at work using it, even the owner. It works, and it kicks ass. I have yet to listen to one person say it doesn't work. Do the research yourself. It's the only thing we keep in our cupboard for cold and flues.

RE: The Flu Commeth

Watch out for pneumonia now......If you have the flu for 7+ days you are very susceptible.....I had it in 2000....got pneumonia and plurisy two weeks later....It was just like a heart attack.....I couldnt move or breathe and almost called 911..kicked my rear out of work for 3 weeks....couldnt walk up stairs, drive, play golf (gasp!) etc....

I learned my lesson....so much for being 42 and bullet proof...Take your vitamins and DO NOT take cough suppressants!! One needs to keep it moving up and out...Guaifenissin is the ingredient in Tussin you want...Be smart or you too can be on Ceclor for 2 weeks with a long needle for lung fluid removal as part of the recovery.

RE: The Flu Commeth

Thanks for the warning. I went on a stiff batch of antibiotics a couple of days ago. Hope it keeps the lungs clean.

And yes, this flu is followed by pneumonia about half the time -- you are so beat up anything near you can grab you up.

COLD-FX.....is that the new zinc lozenge? Those help too...

RE: The Flu Commeth

The flu going around is nasty. The CDC is assuring the public that the flu shot offers some protection even though it was not formulated this strain. One of my patients has developed pneumonia, most patients do not.

The flu is characterized by high fever and headache. Generally there is little sore throat or nasal congestion unlike a "cold." Body aches and cough can be prominent. There are no gastrointestinal symptoms generally associated with it.

Do not take antibiotics on your own or prophylactically. It is the worst thing you can do. Antibiotics have no effect what-so-ever on the flu virus. Antibiotics can give you diarrhea, a yeast infection or overgrowth of C. difficile bacteria in your gut. If you take a suboptimal dose or the wrong antibiotic, you just wipe out your own bacterial flora that is protecting you and will allow more virulent bacteria to proliferate and possibly overwhelm your immune system, killing you. There are some anti-flu medications that may shorten the duration of the illness by about one day, but only if gven within 48 hours of onset of the illness. If a doctor prescribes antibiotics for you, take them to completion, not just until you feel better. He is suspecting a bacterial superinfection.

There is a bad pandemic of influenza that occurs every 12 to 15 years that causes an above average death toll. The flu kills about 40,000 people a year in the US. The one in 1918 killed over 20 million people in the US and Europe - more than the battles of WWI killed. It has been said that if the flu season in 1918 lasted a week or two more, civilization may have ended. Usually the flu kills the very young and old and the weak. The flu in 1918 killed healthy young adults as easily as it killed the old and weak. We are about 35 years overdue for a killer flu.

Get you flu shot now. Supplies are very short this year.

Dave, I hope you feel better soon.

Alexander:

Thanks - I respect your opinion on the matter. The doc did find reason for the anti-biotics in my follow up care so I'm OK with using them.

Of course everyone is effected slightly differently. My "hex" was dizzyness, insane cough, and a throat that nearly caused panic on every swallow - oh - and the stomach and lower track was thankfully solid as a rock.

RE: The Flu Commeth

I had a flu shot 6 weeks ago. So far, I feel good, but after reading this, I am scared ! Rocket & te I am sure are stronger than I as well as alot younger, and look how sick they and Dave S. got. (Well not Rocket) but te & Dave. REALLY Scary.

Get well, Dave - feel better!!!

RE: The Flu Commeth

Good God! After hearing all these horror stories (especially Alexander's), I may not leave my apartment for the next six months! And I'm NOT one to usually worry about these things! I work in cubicle hell, and almost everyone in my "row" has gotten it except me and maybe two others. They were all out for at least four days. Now they're back, and still coughing up a storm. Which really pisses me off, especially when they come in to talk to me about something totally unimportant. I think I wash my hands twenty times a day now (for what good it does), but you can't get around those friggin' door knobs.

I'm looking at investing in one of these:

RE: The Flu Commeth

I did not get the flu but I had to visit the doctor for the first time in my life last sunday. Turned out I had a bad case of bronchitus (SP) which was close to turning into pnemonia. Lucky me I got to purchase a bottle of 140$ cough syrup and some equally pricy antibiotics. getting sick is not good.
