Third Cat in NY

Has anyone in NY chop the third cat and not had a problem with inspection? I would like to get my exhaust done and of course would like to remove the third cat but I don't know anyone who can make an inspection happen (if you know what I mean).

RE: Third Cat in NY

Car should still pass NY emmisions without 3rd cat.
As far as I know there is no visual inspection.
I will let you know in December for sure.
I don't even think it's really a cat because there is no o2 sensor on it. (resonater ?)
Can anyone else confirm this ?

RE: Third Cat in NY

I definitely want to chop the resonator as well. I also think that even if it were a visual inspection, we can still get away with the two cats up front being sufficient enough. I do have a place near me that did not do a visual last month when I got inspected.

RE: Third Cat in NY

Well it's definately a cat, when I had my exhaust done this summer I saved the third cat because I was sending it to a guy that wanted it on the TCCOA board. When you look down the inlet tubes on the cat you can really see how restrictive it is. I don't have any dyno numbers but you can definetly feel the performance increase in the upper rpm ranges. By all means take it off!! I haven't gone for inspection yet but I'm pretty sure I'll pass. I have to say you can tell a difference in how the exhaust smells.

RE: Third Cat in NY

It’s an unmonitored third catalytic converter. It is very restrictive and when I had my exhaust done, I asked the guy to cut it open telling him it only “converted the exhaust tubes” and was not for emissions. It had the catalyst honeycomb material inside it and my exhaust guy was surprised. He told me that if he had known it was "that kind" of converter he wouldn’t have cut it off to start with. Gosh, I was “sad” to learn that (LOL). But I got the exhaust the way I wanted it. :)
