How wide a tire can I get on stock rims?

235 245?

Should I stay with 60's?

RE: Tire Size

Some members have put a 255/50R16 on the factory rims, but whether or not it works seems to depend somewhat on the tire brand, model, and skill of the installer. 245/50R16's will fit more readily, though either way, they may not perform quite as well as a smaller tire, since the rule of thumb for tire/wheel sizing is rim width is greater than or equal to 80% of the section width of a tire. Using this formula, a tire with a 225 mm section width is about the biggest some people would recommend for a 7 inch wheel. The 245/50R16 is extremely close to the factory size tire in terms of circumference, but you can expect about a 3-5% difference in outside diameter, with the speedometer reading slightly higher than the actual speed. The 255/50R16 is even closer in diameter, sometime as little as half an inch difference in circumference.

RE: Tire Size

Take your pick Norm - if you can find them...

If you want to run 16-inch wheels:

For 35-series tires, you will want a tire that is 386 mm wide
For 40-series tires, you will want a tire that is 338 mm wide
For 45-series tires, you will want a tire that is 300 mm wide
For 50-series tires, you will want a tire that is 270 mm wide
For 55-series tires, you will want a tire that is 245 mm wide
For 60-series tires, you will want a tire that is 225 mm wide
For 65-series tires, you will want a tire that is 208 mm wide
For 70-series tires, you will want a tire that is 193 mm wide
For 75-series tires, you will want a tire that is 180 mm wide
For 80-series tires, you will want a tire that is 169 mm wide

RE: Tire Size

Dave are you sure 270 50 will fit my stock rim. That's a lot wider.

Norm:

I picked that chart up from a site that asked for a stock tire size - then spits out all the alternatives - based on profile vs. width.

I think 270 is too wide as well. I'm planning to buy tires soon (stock rims) at a modest 245 / 50 - 16 -- very likely Nitto NT 450 - which are fairly aggressive - but still all weather - and around $100 a piece.

RE: Tire Size

Joe just went wider on his rims, I forget the exact size though, He posted it yesterday.

I have the Potenza RE730's on my car in stock size. They are incredible summer tires. VERY sticky, pebbles are always gettign stuck to them. After a short burn out, they are almost gooey to the touch. Those at detroit last year may remember that.
