Upper Control Arm

The bushings on my driver's side upper control arm are shot. The actual ball joint is fine. Can I get just the bushings or does it all come as one?

RE: Upper Control Arm

It comes as one assembly. Parsamerica.com and advance auto parts have them for $72 (special order though).

RE: Upper Control Arm

Is this the wishbone shaped arm at the top end of the suspension? I had my passenger side wheel off and grabbed the back end of the upper control arm (I think) and it rattles abit or shifts. Does this mean something catastrophic or just simply annoying?

RE: Upper Control Arm

This is exactly what is wrong with mine. It gives you a faint clunk. BTW, 69.99 from rock auto _11 s/H. Part is made by Moog.

RE: Upper Control Arm

I just order all the parts for my front end from 5 star ford, uppers lowers, and the bushings for that strut or radius arm whatever, is was just under $600 total (with a belt tensioner too)

RE: Upper Control Arm

Got my uppers from Max at Five Star and they are the ones to get as they are OEM built by TRW for FOMOCO at the same price as from the local NAPA store. I am trying to support our Board Vendors.

RE: Upper Control Arm

Ok, so I tried to replace the driver's side upper control arm yesterday and quit due to the fact that it looks like the master cylinder and the air strut have to come out. I only had like two hours so I gave it up until next weekend.

Has anyone replaced the control arm and not had to take out the air strut and master cylinder?

Thanks

RE: Upper Control Arm

You don't have to take either out. However, it will not be any fun if you don't have the good tools. My set of gear wrenches helped greatly when i did this project.

Go pick up a set of metric ratcheting wrenches. It'll cost you $60-$80, but it'll save you an hour of turning it 5 degrees, taking the wrench off, putting it back on, turning it again, etc. Just put the gear wrench on there and go.

RE: Upper Control Arm

I hear that, my brother in law has the full set. The only problem is that once I get the nut off the bolt, the head of the bolt hits the air strut, thus not allowing it to come out!

RE: Upper Control Arm

deflate the air strut and remove the nut, then wiggle it and see if it comes out. I'm pretty sure i got it out without removing the strut, but maybe not.

If you do have to remove it, it's pretty easy. Deflate it by removing the solenoid (remove the metal clip holding it in, turn it until it stops and pull it out, at which point all the air will come rushing out, probably scaring you, then turn it again and pull it all the way out, or in this case, push it back in and lock it with the clip, being careful not to cut the o ring). The top of the strut is held to the strut tower by 3 or 4 nuts around the edge, you do not have to touch the large center bolt/nut. Undo the nuts and it'll push right down and swing out of your way.
